Track and field: Elyria's Mateo Medina adds another All-American honor to his list

Elyria High's Mateo Medina keep racking up the honors. The senior earned All-American honors (top eight) with a second-place finish in the high school boys 400-meter championship Saturday at the New Balance Outdoor Track and Field Nationals at Franklin Field in Philadelphia. Medina clocked 46.41 seconds to finish behind No. 1-ranked Quincy Wilson (45.13), a sophomore from Potomac, Maryland. Jaden Marchan, a senior from Leonia High School in New Jersey, was third in 46.58. "It feels great running against the No. 1 guy in the nation and such a great 400 field and having that be my last high school race," Medina said. "I ended as another All-American. Everything is finally done. I can rest up and truly enjoy the rest of my summer. I'm so happy with what I've accomplished this year. "I felt pretty good coming in not the best shape but I did what I could for sure. I'm just relieved. So much weight is off my shoulders now. I don't have to worry about competition. It was a great race. I didn't get out as hard as I usually do. I ran fine through 300 and just went with what I had. Overall I'm happy and blessed to have had the season I had." Avon sophomore Kaitlyn Reese ran a 4:50.94 mile (4:49.25 converted 1,600-meter time), setting a personal record. Her previous best in the mile was 4:57.62 and her best 1,600 meters was 4:55.93. Reese finished 29th out of 91 runners. Reese also teamed with Anika Singh, Riley Moran and Jessica Pendleton in Friday's 3,200-meter relay, finishing 40th out of 59 teams with a time of 9:31.68. Brookside sophomore Avery Davis finished 41st out of 54 finishers in the championship girls 400-meter hurdles in 1:04.38. Avon freshman Paige Justice finished 19th out of 49 finishers in the freshman girls 400-meter hurdles in 1:09.00. Oberlin High sophomore Olivia Hudson finished 53rd out of 64 runners in the 400 meters in 58.11. Hudson also teamed with Melody Cyrus, Aubrey Abeyta and Alyssa Webb in the 800-meter relay, which finished 45th out of 58 in 1:44.98. Radeff-Koonce wins four GENEVA — Brookside's Zuriah Radeff-Koonce led the way for the Oberlin Spikes Track Club at Saturday's USATF Lake Erie Association Junior Olympics at SPIRE, winning the 100- and 200-meter dashes as well as the shot put and long jump in the girls 17-18 age category. Alyse Brediger (100, 200, 400) and Johannah Arnold (shot put, discus, javelin) each won three events for the Oberlin Spikes in the 13-14 age category. For the boys, Kipton Arnold (100 hurdles, triple jump, javelin) had three wins in the 13-14 age group and Dominick Juchnik had three (100, 200, 400) in the 15-16 age group.
