Memorial Day events and happenings

AMHERST — The Memorial Day parade and program will be Monday, May 27, with parade lineup at 9 a.m. on Washington Street. The parade will begin at 10 a.m. at Cleveland Avenue and Forest Street. It will continue south on Forest Street and turn right at Park Avenue. The parade will conclude with a memorial service on the grounds of Amherst City Hall. AVON — The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7035 Memorial Day parade will step off at 9 a.m. from the Avon Senior Center, 36784 Detroit Road, and end at the veterans memorial next to the Aquatic Center, 36265 Detroit Road. A memorial service will take place immediately following the parade. Avon city offices will be closed in observance of Memorial Day on Monday. AVON LAKE — The Memorial Day parade and ceremony will be at 10 a.m. Monday. The parade begins at Avon Lake High School, 175 Avon Belden Road, and ends with a ceremony at 10:45 a.m. at Veterans Memorial Park, 32756 Lake Road. In observance of Memorial Day, the Avon Lake Public Library will be closed Monday. ELYRIA — The city and Elyria Council of Veterans will sponsor the Memorial Day parade on Monday. A ceremony will take place from 9-9:30 a.m. at Ely Square. The parade lineup is from 8:15-8:45 a.m. and post-ceremony from 9:30-9:50 a.m. The parade begins at 10 a.m. at Court and Broad streets, heads east on Broad Street to Washington Avenue, north on Washington Avenue to Harrison Street, east on Harrison to Glenwood Street and ends at Ridgelawn Cemetery at Harrison and Glenwood streets. GRAFTON — As part of the Memorial Day parade at noon Monday, the Grafton Veterans Memorial at Main and Willow streets will be dedicated. The parade begins at the entrance to Reservoir Park on Main Street and travels down Main Street to Railroad Street. Lineup is at 11 a.m. at Reservoir Park, with step-off at noon. The parade is organized by Grafton Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3341, which worked with the village to construct and fund the memorial. Main Street will be closed from noon until 1 p.m. from Crook Street to Becker Court. LaGRANGE/LaGRANGE TOWNSHIP — LaGrange will honor Memorial Day with a parade at 11 a.m. Monday. The parade will line up at the Village Hall parking lot, 301 Liberty St. It will be led by the Keystone High School Band under the direction of John Davis. The parade route will be south on School Street then west on state Route 303 to the circle. There will be a pause at the circle to allow for placement of a memorial wreath at the Civil War memorial site by local Vietnam veteran Bill Tipple. The band will play the national anthem there prior to marching out to the Veterans Memorial at the corner of Route 303 and West Street, where guest speaker Jacob Smith, executive director of the Lorain County Veterans Service Commission, will deliver remarks. Local Boy and Girl Scouts and the honor guard from AMVETS Post 32 will participate in events. All military veterans present will be recognized at the close of the program. LORAIN — City Hall will be closed Monday in observance of Memorial Day. LORAIN COUNTY — The Lorain County Justice Center on Court Street in Elyria will be closed Monday in observance of Memorial Day. NORTH RIDGEVILLE — The Memorial Day parade will begin at 9:45 a.m. Monday at the North Ridgeville High School on Bainbridge Road and conclude at the new Veterans Memorial (across from the senior center) with a memorial service in association with the North Ridgeville Lions Club, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9871 and the Veterans Memorial Committee. There will be a kids bike decorating contest and awards, Best Float and Best Marching Group awards, and car awards for Best in Show and Crowd Pleaser. SHEFFIELD — Village offices will be closed Monday in observance of Memorial Day. SOUTH AMHERST — A Memorial Day parade will line up at 9:30 a.m. Monday on Kenwood Street and proceed down Main Street at 10 a.m. A ceremony will follow at Evergreen Cemetery. VERMILION — The Memorial Day parade and ceremony will start at 10 a.m. Monday. The parade route is from the corner of Main Street to Liberty Avenue, Liberty Avenue to Sandusky Street, Sandusky Street to Ohio Street, and Ohio Street to Victory Park.
