Lorain County Coroner IDs man shot and killed by SWAT team at Indian Hollow

The Lorain County Coroner's Office identified the man shot and killed by the Lorain County SWAT team following a standoff in Carlisle Township on Friday as 60-year-old Brian Dawson. Coroner Dr. Frank Miller said he spoke with Dawson's family on Monday. Miller said he was told Dawson had no fixed address. A news release from Elyria police described Dawson as originally from Elyria. An autopsy is scheduled today, Tuesday, Jan. 16. Miller said "multiple gunshot wounds" is the likely cause of Dawson's death. Dawson was the only person killed or injured after he allegedly pointed a gun at a Lorain County Metro Parks ranger at Sheldon Woods at Indian Hollow Reservation off Parsons Road on Friday night. The ranger was checking on a person sitting in a vehicle. They called for backup after Dawson allegedly pointed a gun, according to the Lorain County Sheriff's Office. The county SWAT team and negotiators were called shortly before 7 p.m. Friday. Negotiations continued for several hours, the sheriff's office said. The SWAT team shot Dawson after he allegedly shot at them, according to the sheriff's office. SWAT medics and EMS personnel tried to keep Dawson alive but he died at the scene, according to the sheriff's office. The Elyria Police Department is handling the investigation into the shooting.
