High school wrestling: Amherst puts the fall in Falls, racks up seven pins in SWC win over Bulldogs

AMHERST — It was a night of domination for Amherst on Thursday. The Comets got the home crowd involved in the match early by winning four of the first six bouts by pin while rolling to a 57-13 win over Olmsted Falls in Southwestern Conference action. Defending sectional champion Vananthony Trunzo (120) improved to 22-4 on the year with a second-period pin of Olmsted Falls' Brady Hexter. It was one of seven pins by the Comets, who improved to 3-1 in the SWC. "We wanted to be very aggressive in the beginning to set a precedent that they aren't beating us," Trunzo said. "I loved the atmosphere here tonight. We love getting pins in from of the home crowd because they love hearing the mat getting slapped." Canin Fritz (132) had a second-period fall and Vincenzo Bonaminio (113) and Charlie Porter (138) both disposed of their opponents in the opening period as Amherst won the first six matches to remove any doubt about who would come out on top. "We had a tough match last week but the team is really starting to jell," Amherst coach Bill Walker said. "Our spirits are up and we've been working hard in practice. This team takes coaching well and it's been a lot of fun in the wrestling room. "When you get pins, it brings a lot of excitement in the gym and hopefully the other wrestlers feed off of it. It was nice to see a full crowd here tonight." The best match of the night was one of only five that went the distance as freshman Isaac Vasquez held on for a 1-0 win at 157 over Dylan Hasenohrl. After starting in the superior position, Vasquez rode out Hasenohrl for the entire second period and then scored the only point of the match with a third-period escape. "It was a tough one. We both obviously battled hard," Vanquez said. "I scored and I had to really fight to keep the score for the rest of the match. I thought I was going to be able to score more but you gotta do what you gotta do. He's a couple of years older than me so he was stronger. I wasn't able to dominate like I usually do." The Comets ended the night with two more quick pins as Ross Auvil (215) and Jordan Hatfield (285) each took care of their opponents in the first period. Amherst also got decisions from Joshua Trinski (120), who defeated Yezen Mussallam 11-6, and Ryan Auvil (190), a 3-1 winner over Cort Zahorchak, and a pin from Logan Banyas at 165. The win allowed the Comets to remain in the second place in the SWC dual meet standings with matches against Elyria, Avon and North Ridgeville yet to come. "Each day we've got to better," Walker said. "If we can do that, good things will happen. I'm not going to make any predictions or anything like that. We just want to improve day in a day out."
