High school football: Clearview's Ayden Cruz and Elyria Catholic's Tim Phillips make it happen, earn first-team All-Ohio honors

Ayden Cruz has played his entire high school career making the team his top priority, but for a year, the Clearview standout has had an individual goal on his mind, too. After being named an All-Ohio honorable mention last season, Cruz was determined to do whatever it took to make the first team in his final season with the Clippers, and Tuesday, he got the news he was waiting for. Cruz was one of two Lorain County athletes to be named first-team All-Ohio in Divisions IV and V, along with Elyria Catholic's Tim Phillips, and the award is the perfect cap on what was a remarkable season for Clearview. "Even being honorable mention for an All-Ohio award, that is a great feeling, but at the same time, you see third team, second team and first team and you sit there like, 'Why am I not on that team?'" Cruz said of last year. "So, knowing what you did without any eyes on you … to come out in people's faces and kind of show them what it takes. It takes the time and effort behind the scenes than more of it does in front of everyone." A 6-foot-2, 185-pound linebacker, Cruz finished with 90 total tackles, including 73 solo and 12 tackles for loss, and had four interceptions, three blocked field goals and two blocked punts. "It was always just (about) trying to do everything beneficial, you know, blocking field goals, blocking punts to put us in good field position — anything that would help us win the game," he said of this season. "I didn't really care about my own stats. I only cared about winning the game at the end of the day." That mentality served him and the Clippers well this season. Behind the play of Cruz and a host of other talented players, Clearview hosted — and won — its first playoff game since 2018, leading a stunning turnaround from the four combined wins the team had the previous three seasons. "I even told my dad that this whole season was my favorite season of all the sports I played all my life," Cruz said. "For us to go through the adversity we did for the past three or four years, that helped build us into better men and better players — being able to face adversity without just putting our heads down. "That's not what we're going to do. We're going to sit there and take the punch and be able to get back up. For instance, the Firelands game, we were down, I think, by two (scores) going into halftime (but) were able to come back and win that game. Adversity from the past couple of years has helped build us into being better men." Cruz is joined by several teammates in the All-Ohio ranks. Senior running back Ethan Lorenza was named to the second team, sophomore quarterback Cy Christensen, senior wide receiver Malcolm Lane, senior offensive lineman Greg O'Hern and senior punter Conner Kane were named to the third team, and junior defensive lineman Josiah Longo was named honorable mention. Brookside seniors Aidan McLaughlin (second team) and Ben Montgomery (third team), Keystone junior Grady Whitacre (second team) and senior Kade Stivason (third team) also were recognized in Division V. "There's no other way I would want to end my high school career," Cruz said. Phillips' journey to becoming one of the best in the state wasn't as linear, having changed positions this season from wide receiver to defensive back, but the award is just as gratifying. "The work it took to get in was just unbelievable," he said. "The coaches, they put us through so much and the stuff they put us through helped us. … What we did, they took from Ohio State and the NFL. "I loved (playing) receiver and I was going to camps for receiver, (but) I kind of fell in love with the defensive side of the ball because, I mean, you get to take your anger out and hit people whenever you want," Phillips added with a laugh. That love obviously translated to the field, where he put up big-time numbers. He had 105 total tackles this season — good for sixth in Lorain County — including 55 solo tackles and 26.5 tackles for loss, as well as 12.5 sacks and 54 quarterback hurries. His 12.5 sacks were the most in the county by a handful, with Columbia's Justin Smith and Gavin Tollett tied for second with seven. Phillips is joined by several teammates on the Division IV All-Ohio list, including senior Graydon Rollins (second team), senior Jackson Smith (third team), sophomore Trent Merrill (third team), junior Brady Engle (third team) and J.P. Spray (honorable mention). Other Lorain County athletes recognized in Division IV include a pair from Firelands — senior Logan Urban (second team) and junior Noah Angle (third team). "I didn't expect it to happen," Phillips said. "I mean, switching from a different position to playing D-line, which I'm undersized for, and getting All-Ohio for defensive end, it's just incredible."
