Guardians notes: Guardians in the dark on Jose Ramirez's appeal of three-game suspension

CLEVELAND — The Guardians have not heard from Major League Baseball regarding the timing of a decision on third baseman Jose Ramirez's appeal of a three-game suspension. "I don't know how much in advance we will know," manager Terry Francona said. "I don't know if it's like an hour, I don't know if it's the next day, I really don't know. "I know it says in the rules they have to (serve the suspension) within 30 days. They usually try to (rule on the appeal) that week, but it's not set in stone. I'm sure some of it is dependent on how busy they are and what's going on, things like that." Ramirez was one of eight disciplined for a bench-clearing incident against the White Sox on Saturday at Progressive Field that was ignited by a fist fight between him and Chicago shortstop Tim Anderson (six-game suspension). Of the eight, five were from Cleveland, with Francona, third base coach Mike Sarbaugh and closer Emmanuel Clase suspended for a game. Gabriel Arias was fined. Francona served his suspension in the series opener against Toronto on Monday night, watching the game from his office at Progressive Field. He got to a see a sparkling performance from rookie right-hander Gavin Williams, who allowed only a hit and struck out a career-high 12 batters over seven innings of a 3-1 loss. "He looked pretty good from my viewpoint, because they're a good fastball hitting team and he was challenging them, and in the zone," Francona said. "A lot of it was up but in the zone and he was getting it by them. That was exciting to watch. "I don't care if you're on the couch or in the dugout, that's kind of nice to see." Doctor's office Francona said Josh Naylor (right oblique strain) is eager to leave the injured list."He's convinced he's going to play in three days. I don't think that's going to happen, but you appreciate it," Francona said of Naylor, who was placed on the 10-day IL on Aug. 1. "(Head trainer) James (Quinlan) is saying this is kind of a hard (rehab) because he's so strong that when they try to test him, he can do a lot of stuff."But with obliques, it's not like a hamstringing, where if you feel it, you can maybe go up to a point and maybe protect it. You take one swing or one misstep and you hurt your oblique and you're done for (awhile), so they're going to try to have milestones that he can accomplish and then continue to move on. And if he does it quick, I don't think we want to slow him down." Francona has received positive reports on Triston McKenzie (right elbow sprain) and Shane Bieber (right elbow inflammation)."They're not close to pitching, but by all accounts they're doing OK, and I'd rather hear that than something else," said Francona. Cal Quantrill (right shoulder inflammation) was slated to make a rehab appearance for Triple-A Columbus in Toledo on Wednesday. Francona said infielder Tyler Freeman (right shoulder strain) appears on track to leave the IL when eligible Saturday, but the team is mulling whether to send him on a rehab assignment first. Wait a second Andres Gimenez entered Tuesday batting .200 (10-for-50) with a .310 on-base percentage in 13 games since replacing the traded Amed Rosario in the No. 2 spot in Cleveland's order. "The thing I'm not crazy about is we have two lefties (leadoff hitter Steven Kwan and Gimenez) back-to-back, but Gimi seems real comfortable there, and after talking to him, he said he's more comfortable knowing he has to get on base than trying to drive in runs," Francona said. "And if that's the case, hopefully he can get on base a bunch, because not only who hits behind Josey, but who's hitting in front of him is going to dictate how he gets pitched to." Glad to be here Newly acquired outfielder Ramon Laureano met with the media prior to making his Guardians debut in right field Tuesday. Laureano spent the first six years of his career with Oakland, getting designated for assignment Saturday after batting .213 with six home runs and 21 RBIs over 64 games this season. "I think it's a blessing. I think it was a favor from (the A's). I think it's time to move on and finally I'm here. I'm very excited about it," he said. "I guess the rule here is just play hard and I'm here to play hard and be healthy and do what I know I can do and go after it." Roundin' third Sarbaugh served his suspension Tuesday, while assistant JT Maguire, who oversees outfielders and baserunning, filled in for him. Beach Boys front man and original member Mike Love, the uncle of former Cavaliers star Kevin Love, threw out a ceremonial first pitch.
