Hot Stove baseball: Showers shut down Sheffield showdown in Class G

SHEFFIELD LAKE — The Hot Stove Class G battle for supremacy in Sheffield Lake was put on hold by Mother Nature on Saturday. The Sheffield Cardinals and Sheffield Venom played their way into the bottom of the third inning with the Venom leading 9-5 when the skies opened up, suspending the game at Volunteer Field. This is the first year the Sheffield-Sheffield Lake Youth Baseball Association has hosted Hot Stove regional play. The date and time for the completion of the game had not been determined as of press time. The Cardinals, mostly made up of 11-year-olds, got things going in the top of the first when starting pitcher Collin Lewis was hit by a pitch, moved up on an infield single by Nick Boerio and scored when he stole third and the throw went down the left-field line. The Venom answered in their half of the first with five runs, getting a similar run when Kaeden Keane was hit by a pitch, stole two bases and scored on a throwing error. Xavier Centifanti singled and came home on an infield single by Cole Tomanek. After a pitching change with one out, Tyler Kovch drove home a run with a fielder's choice ground ball to put the Venom up 5-1. The Cardinals stayed aggressive as Brayden Johnson singled to start the second then stole second and scored on two throwing errors on the same play. Iden Bennett kept the inning going with a walk and a steal, and Tyler Resch sent him home with a base hit to trim the Venom lead to 5-3. But the first four batters for the Venom reached and scored in the bottom of the second as Damon Brutout singled and William Popowski walked to start things off. Keane sent one run home with a ground ball that was played into an error. River Cambarare picked up an RBI with a fielder's choice and eventually scored on two more Cardinals errors. The Cardinals bounced back with a pair of runs in the third as the first wave of showers moved into the area, getting three straight two-out hits from Collin Lewis, Boerio and Kristoff before a ground ball to third ended the inning. Jaxson Centifati started the bottom of the third for the Venom with a walk in the driving rain.
