Guardians notes: Josh Naylor finding his groove offensively

CLEVELAND — Josh Naylor entered Tuesday on an extended tear, batting .386 (44-for-114) with 34 RBIs over his last 30 games. He had 44 RBIs over his last 40 games, with 24 coming after the sixth inning. "I feel like as well as he's done, and this is kind of exciting organizationally, I don't think he's reached what he's going to do because he's still figuring out who he is," manager Terry Francona said of Naylor, who ranked sixth in the majors with 53 RBIs through Monday. "He's got through the injury (in 2021). That's one thing. That was a huge hurdle for him. "When he swings at strikes and he doesn't try to do too much, he does a lot, but he's still learning. I guess we can kind of forget sometimes, too, he's not very old." Naylor's brother, Bo, was promoted from Triple-A Columbus on Friday and started Sunday, going 0-for-4 and striking out twice. He was back in the lineup Tuesday night, catching and batting ninth. "I think we knew he would handle himself. I don't think anybody's worried about how he's going to handle himself or he wouldn't be here," Francona said of Bo Naylor, who hit .253 with 13 homers and 48 RBIs in 60 games at Triple-A. "I think there's some things that he and Sandy (Alomar) would like to clean up a little bit on receiving and blocking and things, that's OK. Again, he's young. "There's a lot to like, and if there are some growing pains, and maybe there won't be, but if there are, we need to get through them." It should help to have his older brother in the clubhouse. "He probably hasn't played with him a ton," Francona said of Josh Naylor, who turns 26 Thursday. Bo is 23. "When you're 14 and your brother's 11, you want no part of that. So this is pretty cool for them. It's got to be." Doctor's office Right-hander Cal Quantrill (shoulder inflammation) is scheduled to throw 40 pitches Wednesday at the team's spring training facility in Goodyear, Arizona, before returning for a rehab outing with Columbus on Friday. "We kind of knew he's feeling really good 'cause he wanted to come back and just jump into the rotation. We didn't think that made a whole lot of sense," Francona said. Yam what I yam Francona was asked to give an assessment of his team as it entered Tuesday five games under .500 and two games behind the first-place Twins in the Central Division standings. "Whatever our record is is what we are. That's how I always feel," he said. "No matter how we got to it or should it be better, should it be worse? Our record is what it is, so we need to do better. "I think we will. I always feel that way, but that's fluid." Roundin' third Touki Toussaint was claimed off waivers by the White Sox on Tuesday. He made a spot start for Cleveland, walking five batters in 3 2/3 innings of a 5-1 loss to Arizona on Friday.
