High school baseball: Elyria Catholic's Dominic Calanni, Firelands' Cory Ransom and Keystone's Jack Sivec make first-team All-Ohio

Lorain County continued its tradition of producing some of the state's top baseball talent this season with three players earning first-team All-Ohio honors from the Ohio High School Baseball Coaches Association on Friday. Keystone's Jack Sivec, who led the Lorain County League and the area with five home runs, made it in Division III, while Elyria Catholic's Dominic Calanni and Firelands' Cory Ransom were Division II selections. Elyria's Catholic's Anthony Hutter made second-team in Division II, while Amherst pitcher Chase Meyer made honorable mention in Division I.All three first-team honorees are seniors. "I knew this was a possibility with the home runs I hit this year, but I was really expecting honorable mention," Sivec said. "To be named first-team really means a lot. After the work that's been put in, this feels very rewarding." Sivec, who will continue his playing career at Baldwin Wallace next season, hit .438 with 27 RBIs. "I was thrilled for Jack," Keystone coach Bert Fitzgerald said. "His stats for this year and last year were about the same. Last year our record wasn't as good so he didn't get any love. The fact we won six or seven more games this year helped him get the payoff he deserved." Ransom batted .541 with 13 doubles and 28 RBIs, while also stealing 33 bases. Just a year ago, his brother Kyle was named first-team All-Ohio. "After getting honorable mention two years in a row it was exciting to get first-team," he said. "This was one my goals coming into the year. Being able to get the same award my brother Kyle got last year and my other brother Colin got a few years back, it's a great thing to put on my dad's resume that all three of his kids got first-team All-Ohio." Firelands won two LCL championships in Ransom's three years on varsity. "It's a good award to get, it's an individual award but it's something my team helped me get," Ransom said. "It wasn't just about me. Being able to play good baseball on a great team is how you get these awards and put up the stats I got this year." No area player came through in big situations more than Calanni. He led the Panthers with 32 RBIs, 15 of which came with two outs. "He had so many big hits, so many games we won were because of him getting those two-out hits," Elyria Catholic Bruce Lisicky said. "Without him, those games could have went a different way. He's just an all-around player. I really didn't see anyone as good as him defensively all-year. He saved us games both offensively and defensively." A contact hitter, Calanni also led Elyria Catholic with a .462 average while striking out only eight times in 92 plate appearances. "I woke up this morning and mom told me to check my phone and I had a message from Coach Lisicky that I made first-team All-Ohio. It was a great way to start my day," Calanni said. "We couldn't get past the district finals but as a personal award it was a great way to cap off my senior year. "I wanted to provide for my team. I wasn't going up there trying to hit home runs, I wanted to keep it simple and get the job done. It feels great to be in the company of the guys from Elyria Catholic who have won this honor in the past and I'm blessed to share it with them."
