Closures The Lorain County Administration Building on Middle Avenue in Elyria will be closed Monday in observance of Memorial Day. All branches of the Lorain Public Library System will be closed on Monday in observance of Memorial Day. Holds placed in the exterior lockers will be accessible at each branch, and the drive-thru windows at the Avon and North Ridgeville Branches will be available for drop offs only. Most banks, courts, city offices and other government services will be closed Monday. Check with your local city, township or village officials if you are not sure. Avon The Memorial Day Parade will step off at 9 a.m. Monday. It will start at the Avon Senior Center, 36786 Detroit Road, and proceed down Detroit Road, ending at the Veterans Memorial behind the Post Office. A service will immediately follow at the Veterans Memorial. Avon Lake The Memorial Day parade will be held at 10 a.m. Monday. The parade begins at Avon Lake High School, 175 Avon Belden Road, and ends at Veterans Memorial Park, 32756 Lake Road. A ceremony will be held there at 10:45 a.m. Trash pickup will be delayed one day next week. Brownhelm Township What locals call "The Shortest Parade in Town'' takes place at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Claus Road and North Ridge Road to Brownhelm Cemetery. Parade participants line up by 1:30 p.m. with the parade leaving at 1:45 p.m. to head to the Brownhelm Cemetery. The Amherst American Legion leads the parade followed by the Brownhelm Historical Association wagon, Brownhelm 4-H Club, antique cars, tractors & more. At the Veterans Memorial site, a short ceremony honoring veterans will follow. All are welcome to join in the parade or the presentation at the Brownhelm Cemetery. Eaton Township Memorial Day Service at Butternut Ridge Cemetery, Eaton Township at 1 p.m. Sunday. Guest speaker is Dr. Edward Horvath, combat physician and decorated Iraq War veteran. Call for volunteers to place American Flags on 500 veterans' graves at Butternut Ridge Cemetery, Eaton Township. Meet at cemetery's pole barn at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 27. Elyria The city is hosting several events to honor and remember all of our late veterans. The annual Elyria Memorial Day Parade kicks off at 10 a.m. Monday. Division Oneincludes military personnel, veterans, and groups in vehicles as well as walkers. The parade also features several bands including The Elyria High School marching band, Open Door Christian School band, Local drum and baton corps and The Deputies. New features in this year's parade include a parade trolley sponsored by The Lorain County Visitors Bureau. The trolley is available for veterans who are not able to walk the parade. In addition, any veteran is welcome to march in the parade–in or out of uniform–with veterans service organizations.The parade is approximately one mile in length. It follows Broad Street from Court Street to Washington Avenue, then goes north on Washington Avenue to Harrison Street. It will then go east and end at Ridgelawn Cemetery where all vehicles must turn left. Walkers may turn right or left but should use the sidewalks.The Elyria Council of Veterans is placing flags on veterans' graves in several local cemeteries today and the organization especially invites Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and other youth groups to participate. Prior to the flag placement activity, participants can enjoy coffee, juice, and doughnuts at the American Legion Post at 7:30 a.m. The event is expected to end at 9:30 a.m. On Sunday evening, American Legion Post 12 will also host the Council of Veterans' annual Memorial Wreath Ceremony at its hall. Doors open at 6:15 p.m. and the service begins at 7 p.m. Monday morning, the Council of Veterans will conduct its annual Memorial Day Ceremony from 9 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. in Ely Square. Council of Veterans Commander Melissa Rodgers is the master of ceremonies. The keynote speaker is David K. Root. Root is a U.S. Navy veteran, past state commander for the Department of Ohio VFW, and the current vice commander for the Council of Veterans. Mayor Frank Whitfield will offer remarks. Lorain The Lorain Veterans Council will host a Memorial Day commemoration ceremony on Monday. Setup for the events of the day will start at 8 a.m. at Black River Landing. The lineup for the parade will begin on Black River Lane at 10 a.m. with the parade stepping off at 11 a.m. A Memorial Day ceremony will take place at Black River Landing at noon or shortly before. Closing ceremonies for the day will include the AMVETS program at 6 p.m. followed by the Disabled American Veterans program, "Reading of Fallen Heroes" and rifle salute at 11 p.m. North Ridgeville The North Ridgeville Historical Society will host a grand rededication ceremony for the war memorials at the Old Town Hall, 36119 Center Ridge Road. The event will be held outdoors at 1 p.m. Sunday. In storage for eight years for the Center Ridge Road widening project, the monuments have recently been reinstalled by the city.The North Ridgeville VFW Post 9871 Honor Guard will participate, and the ceremony will honor all veterans, especially those fallen soldiers memorialized on the monuments, many of whose families will be in attendance. In addition, the Historical Society will reveal the addition of the name of Pvt. Howard Petersen, U.S. Army, to the WWII stone. His family will be in attendance and will be the honored Gold Star family in the Memorial Day parade the following day.Although the museum will be closed, a few military displays are planned, refreshments will be served, and attendees are encouraged to bring a lawn chair to enjoy the day. A Memorial Day parade and service will be held Monday with events starting at 9 a.m. The parade will begin at the Senior Center and travel down Bainbridge Road, ending at Ranger Stadium with the memorial service featuring the North Ridgeville Lions Club and VFW Post 9871. Oberlin The Oberlin school district invites the public to attend its annual Memorial Day ceremony starting at 11 a.m. Monday at Wright Memorial Park, 17 W. Vine St., Oberlin. The event will feature the Oberlin High School Marching Band, several speakers and a laying of wreath ceremony by the Oberlin High School Interact Club. Guests are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs. City offices will be closed Monday in observance of the holiday. Wellington Wellington and American Legion Post 390 Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony is Monday. Veterans are invited to walk in the Memorial Day Parade beginning at 8:15 a.m. at Wellington Village Hall, 12300 Forest Hill Blvd. The parade ends at the Wellington Veterans Memorial, at Forest Hill and South Shore boulevards, and will be followed at 8:30 a.m. by the Memorial Day Ceremony. If you are an active service member or retired veteran attending the ceremony, you will have an opportunity to register at the Wellington tent, on the morning of the event, to be recognized during the ceremony. Cuyahoga County The Bay Village Historical Society will participate in the city's Memorial Day parade on Monday. We will march from the Huntington Reservation parking lot west on Lake Road to Lakeside Cemetery, where a brief ceremony will be held. We will then march east on Lake Road back to Cahoon Memorial Park, for speeches, band music and additional festivities. Show up at the western section of the Huntington Reservation parking lot between 8:15 a.m. and 8:30 a.m.
