High school track: Hayden Valenti named MVP to help Vermilion boys win own invite; Arianna Floyd leads Firelands to girls title

VERMILION — A pleasant afternoon and evening turned into some hot competition at the annual Vermilion Invitational. The host Sailors held off North Ridgeville 122-120 to capture the boys crown at Vermilion High School, while Firelands topped Brookside 92.5-90 in the girls meet. "The kids were running well tonight," Vermilion coach Dave Domonkos said. "This is the best they've run all year, but it's the best weather we've had all year, so we're excited about that. We're excited about turning the corner." Sailors senior Hayden Valenti was named meet MVP after claiming firsts in the shot put with a throw of 50-feet, 9 inches, and the discus with a mark of 155-7. On the girls side, sophomore Arianna Floyd led the Falcons by sweeping firsts in the hurdles, taking the 100 in 16.43 seconds and the 300 in 47.19, plus adding a second in the long jump at 16.3.75. "I think we did pretty well," Firelands coach Steve Lias said. "I thought we did some good things and I thought there were a couple of races we could have done better, but our mind is on next week for conference. Our focus has been there, but I also I know our kids have prom tomorrow and I know their focus is on that, too." Floyd tied Brookside junior Zurich Radeff Koonce for top individual honors. "Ariannah Floyd has done this for two years now," Lias said. "She's great. She's a fantastic hurdler, a competitor. At every meet, we run her in four events, so she's a workhorse." Mansfield Madison finished third in the 11-team girls field with 78 points, followed by North Ridgeville (69), Vermilion (63), Oberlin (61), Elyria Catholic (55), Lorain (52), Wellington (46.50), Keystone (32) and North Olmsted (23). The Wildcats were third in the 12-team boys meet (118), with the Falcons in fourth with 71 and the Panthers fifth with 58. The Cardinals placed sixth (57), followed by the Dukes (38), North Olmsted (28), Oberlin (20), John Hay (18). Mansfield Madison (10) and Lorain (3). "A lot of our boys stepped up and had good performances," Rangers coach Jim Shurtleff said. "It's nice to have a meet like this where it's warm, where it's not raining and our kids can feel good about themselves heading into conference." Both meets came down to the 1,600-meter relay with the team of Logan Nagle, Zach Shackelford, Ryne Shackelford and Alex Nagle taking first for Keystone in 3:35.83. That foursome also topped the field in the 800 relay in 1:32.38. The Falcons closed out the girls meet with a win from Hazel Littleton, Jordyn Copley, Bella Simmons and Audrey Smith in the 1,600-meter relay in 4:18.72. "I'm real happy with how our kids competed tonight," Brookside coach Brad Barhorst said. "We actually had decent weather. It's the first time in a couple of weeks we haven't been dodging rain drops or wind gusts, so our best kids had good days." Radeff Koonce topped Floyd for first in the long jump at 16-4.5, while Madison Palmer took firsts in the 1,600 (5:34.88) and 3,200 (11:57.38). The Oberlin 800 relay team of Olivia Hudson, Aubrey Abeyta, Alyssa Webb and Phoebe Shuck placed first in 1:49.15, with Johnson winning the 400 in 59.92 and Hudson taking the 200 in 26.7. Meagan Rini of the Sailors took first in the discus (112-3) and second in the shot (36-7.5), with Samone Whitt of Lorain winning the shot with a toss of 37-5. The Elyria Catholic team of Audrey Fore, Sydney Stratton, Elizabeth Davis and Gracie Jones topped the 3,200 relay in 10:53.53, with Jones adding a first in the 800 (2:30.38). Andrea Whitman placed first for Keystone in the pole vault (8-0). In the boys field, the North Ridgeville team of Tayo McLaughlin, Ebrahim Alzraqat, Gustavo Imbacuan and Lincoln Bouman took the 3,200 relay in 8:25.84, with Travis Good, Mark Pierce, Devin Wilkins and Connor Costin winning the 400 relay in 43.93. McLaughlin added an individual first in the 1,600 run (4:41.55) and Nicholas Geraci won the high jump at 6-0. Keystone picked up firsts from Owen Maiden in the pole vault (11-6), Logan Nagle in the 400 dash (51.38), Alex Nagle in the 200 dash (23.18) and Micheal Gale in the 3200 (10:26.74). Wildcats standout Ryne Shackelford only placed in the two relays. Lincoln Barnhart won the long jump for Brookside (19-10.5), Anthony DeMartinis of Elyria Catholic took the 110 hurdles (16.01), Aiden Bokulich of Firelands won the 300 hurdles (42.5) and Evan Hudson of Oberlin won the 800 run (2:02.03).
