Elyria man charged in 2021 Henderson Bridge crash

An Elyria man has been charged with causing a serious traffic crash on a Lorain bridge that injured his sister in August 2021. Dominique McGee, 32, of Elyria, is charged with vehicular assault and failure to stop after an accident, both felonies, as well as driving under suspension, negligent assault, willful and wanton disregard of safety, and operating a motor vehicle without reasonable control, all misdemeanors, in Lorain County Common Pleas Court. He was being held in the Lorain County Jail on $10,000 bond, according to jail records. The case is assigned to Judge Raymond Ewers. According to a search warrant unsealed in Common Pleas Court, Lorain police officers responded to a one-car crash on the Henderson Bridge just before 2 a.m. Aug. 21, 2021. A white Chevrolet Malibu that was headed west lost control, crossed into oncoming traffic, then crashed into a guardrail and telephone pole, according to the search warrant. An intoxicated 29-year-old man found at the scene told police he was a passenger in the car and that the driver had run off. The man who stayed was transported to Mercy Health Hospital in Lorain, where blood was drawn before he left the hospital against medical advice, according to the search warrant. A second passenger, a 26-year-old Lorain woman, was found unconscious in the grass a few feet from the car and taken to Mercy Health, where she was diagnosed with a lacerated liver. She told officers the 29-year-old man was driving the car when it crashed. A third passenger, another woman, was reportedly taken to a hospital in Avon by another car, but police couldn't find her or contact her, according to the search warrant. When questioned by police two days later, the injured 26-year-old Lorain woman changed her story. She said McGee, who is her brother, was driving when they crashed, according to the search warrant. Officers got a search warrant for the Malibu and found a blood stain on the windshield where it appeared the driver had struck his head during the crash. DNA in that blood sample matched McGee's DNA in a state database. McGee was indicted by a Lorain County grand jury on Jan. 27 and arrested Feb. 3. Lorain police took additional DNA swabs from him on Feb. 9, according to the search warrant.
