High school wrestling: Avon Lake continues hot streak, beats Avon

AVON LAKE — Fresh off winning its home tournament, Avon Lake took care of its rival. The Shoremen won 10 of 14 bouts against Avon in winning their Southwestern Conference opening dual meet 50-19 on Thursday evening. "It feels really good," said Jack Marconi, who won an 11-2 major decision against Nico Kalamaras at 165 pounds, which ultimately clinched the victory for Avon Lake. "I felt really good at the beginning of the match. I was a little iffy in the third period, I thought I could have done a little better, but overall I thought I did a really good job today. We've been working really hard, and I know in years past we haven't gotten a lot of team wins. We've really improved a lot and I think we're going to do some amazing things." The teams competed at 12 weight classes after the Shoremen won by forfeit at 106 and 113. John Lutsock (132), Gavin Andrews (150) and Clay Broadhurst (215) all secured pins for Avon Lake. Joe Marconi's bout at 157 put the Shoremen in position to clinch as he secured a 22-6 technical fall against Will Kiessling. Marconi built a 10-3 lead in the first with four takedowns and a two-second near fall. He continued to pile up points in the second, securing a reversal after choosing down and following that up with three takedowns and another near fall. "I just focused on scoring points," Joe Marconi said. "Improving technique is the most important, especially against a team like Avon, and then it's just about staying mentally tough." The Shoremen and Eagles finished first and second, respectively, at the Cobos Classic hosted by Avon Lake on Saturday. Three of Thursday's bouts were rematches from the tournament, and all three went the same way. Avon Lake's Nathan Perry defeated Mason Fitch 13-2 in a rematch of the 138 final. Avon's Trey Daugherty defeated Nick Perry 3-2 in a rematch from their seventh-place match at 120 and Adam Schumacher pinned Avon Lake's Jack Shepard again after doing so in the 175 final Saturday. "I'm super proud of our kids," Avon Lake coach Scott Sedlick said. "They get up for these dual meets, they love em. We've got the spotlight, we've got some music. It was just a good atmosphere and the kids had a good time. Our younger kids had some good performances tonight. It was just an all-around good performance." Daugherty's 3-2 decision was the closest bout of the evening. Daugherty built a 3-0 lead with an escape and a takedown in the second period, but Perry secured a late escape in the second period and then added another in the first minute of the third. However he could not secure a takedown to complete the rally. Riley Atkins (144) and Eian Englehart (195) also secured wins for Avon with a major decision and a pin, respectively. "Avon Lake's a great team," Avon coach Mark Jayne said. "I told the guys I was really impressed with their intensity. They wrestled hard start to finish no matter what the result was.
