High school soccer: Avon Lake's high-scoring Ella Grode adds another goal ... first-team All-Ohio

Ella Grode already holds the Avon Lake record for goals in a season and in a career. Now add first-team All-Ohio to her list of accomplishments. The junior forward was the lone Lorain County player to earn first-team honors when the Ohio Scholastic Soccer Coaches Association released its list Sunday. "Honestly, it's great," said Grode, who was a second-team selection last season. "First-team is an honor and I'm happy to represent Avon Lake and Internationals (her club team). It was definitely a goal of mine and I knew I would have some tough competition with so many talented players." Grode set out to do big things this season and exceeded all expectations by setting the single-season school record with 37 goals and the career scoring record with 75 goals. She scored six goals in the Shoregals' Southwestern Conference-clinching win over North Ridgeville. "Ella had an amazing season with 37 goals and eight assists," Avon Lake coach Brian Salco said. "She's one of those kids that makes everyone around her better. She's a workhorse, she's got a great head on her shoulders, it's all business for her." Over the past two seasons, Avon Lake has won a district title, advanced to a regional final for the first time in school history and won 36 games, including a school-record 21 in 2021. "I'm grateful to be a part of this team and community," Grode said. "We've had a lot of fun achieving this together." Grode, who has already committed to playing college soccer at Eastern Kentucky University, has shown everyone across the state what she can do on the field but Salco said what she does off the field is just as impressive. "When you have a player of her caliber who wants to keep getting better, and her teammates see that, it sets the culture and allows for the entire team to share in her success," Salco said. "What she does for us is beyond what you see on the field. Everyone loves being around her and playing with her. She's worked perfectly with what our coaching staff was looking for. She's helped put Avon Lake on the map. This is exciting stuff for us." Grode is already looking forward to taking the field again next fall. "I hope our team can go further in playoffs next year," Grode said. "Along with this, I'm looking forward to enjoying my senior season and preparing to play at Eastern Kentucky." Lorain County was well-represented on the second team with seniors Sean Wilson (Avon) and Gavin Heighberger (Elyria) earning spots in Division I and Vermilion junior forward Alex Werth making it in Division II. On the girls side, North Ridgeville senior midfielder Bella Antoio and Avon junior goalkeeper Ariana Vakos were both on the second team in Division I, while Firelands senior Bella Simmons earned a spot in Division II. Elyria Catholic grad Joe Jovanovski picked up the private school Coach of the Year award after leading Lutheran West to a 12-6 record.
