Elyria police Tuesday, May 3 6:06 p.m. — Lowell Street, operating a vehicle impaired. Michael Higginbotham, 32, of High Street, was arrested on a misdemeanor DUI charge and cited with failure to maintain assured clear distance ahead, also a misdemeanor. Officers responding to a traffic crash learned Higginbotham's gray Nissan Altima had rear-ended a stopped brown GMC Yukon. Higginbotham was passed out behind the wheel in an apparent drug overdose, and was given naloxone. LifeCare and Elyria firefighters soon arrived, and Higginbotham was taken to University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center. He refused to tell police what he had taken or when, and refused a urine sample. Higginbotham was cited and released for medical treatment. 8:11 p.m. — Buffalo Wild Wings, Midway Boulevard, operating a vehicle impaired. Darren Belt, 49, of Newcomerstown, was arrested on misdemeanor charges of carrying concealed weapons, improper handling of firearms in a motor vehicle, and failure to maintain physical control. After fighting with an unknown person while seated at the bar at 239 Midway Blvd., Belt went out to his red Dodge Ram and sat in the driver's seat. He appeared intoxicated, argued with officers and wouldn't comply with their orders. Belt refused sobriety tests, breath and urine tests and was taken to the Lorain County Jail. A search of his truck found a .45 caliber Rock Island Armory handgun with a magazine and holster but no ammunition in the center console. Belt also was banned from Buffalo Wild Wings. Wednesday, May 4 7:11 p.m. — South Logan Street, domestic violence. Beth Zupancic, 40, of South Logan Street, was arrested on misdemeanor domestic violence and assault charges. Zupancic hit her 32-year-old live-in boyfriend over the head with a large plastic picture frame, hit him twice in the face and damaged the walls in their house. After telling officers she was a "good person" who "didn't deserve to go to jail," Zupancic was taken to the Lorain County Jail. Thursday, May 5 1:41 a.m. — Lake Avenue and Chestnut Street, operating a vehicle impaired. Mia Sweat, 22, of Lorain, was arrested on misdemeanor charges of DUI, driving under suspension and speeding. An officer saw Sweat's blue 2013 Ford sedan speeding in a 35 mph zone near West River Road. Sweat smelled of alcohol, admitted to drinking, and failed three sobriety tests. Her blood alcohol content tested at .161, which is more than twice the legal limit to drive. She was released to a sober person. 3:36 a.m. — Olivet Drive, operating a vehicle impaired. Anthony Plato, 41, of Ambler Drive, was arrested on a felony cocaine possession charge and a misdemeanor charge of failure to maintain physical control. Officers found Plato sitting behind the wheel of his black Chevrolet Colorado in a stranger's driveway. Plato was asleep and had to be woken up by an officer. He smelled of alcohol and told officers "he was just sleeping and he was lost." Plato then yelled and swore at the officers, who found 1.1 grams of cocaine in his wallet. Plato then complained he couldn't breathe, but when LifeCare staff showed up to evaluate him he "began to laugh and then told LifeCare to leave and that he was fine." He was taken to the Lorain County Jail.
