2 dead at Lakeview Park Beach (UPDATED)

LORAIN — Two bodies have been recovered following an incident at Lakeview Park Beach on Tuesday evening. According to a news release from Lorain County Metro Parks, a 911 call came in at 6:14 p.m. for reports of a teenaged male who had gone into the water and failed to resurface. A 20-year-old male also went into the water, and also didn't resurface. The U.S. Coast Guard along with the Lorain police dive team and local authorities worked the scene for more than three hours Tuesday, and Coast Guard helicopters conducted an aerial search of the area. The teen's body was recovered around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday. The search for the second swimmer was suspended around 10 p.m. on account of darkness, and resumed at 8 a.m., due to the prediction of storms later today. The body of the 20-year-old was recovered by the Lorain City Dive Team around 9:50 a.m. today. Neither swimmer has been identified. Lorain Police Capt. Mike Failing would not say why the swimmers were in the water or how police believe they got into trouble. "Lake Erie is a very hazardous lake because of lots of undertows," Failing said. "This beach is like a lot of beaches in northern Ohio. We don't have lifeguards here." No lifeguards were on duty at the time of the incident, and the swimming area of the beach is not open for the season yet. The Lorain County Metro Parks Rangers shut down access to the park for the duration of the operation, but the park and beach are now reopened. The beach is currently posted no swimming.
