High school track and field: North Ridgeville girls, Keystone boys prevail on record-breaking day at Brookside Invitational

SHEFFIELD VILLAGE — Gemma Kilgore helped rewrite the Brookside Invitational record book Friday. The North Ridgeville senior won three individual events and was part of the winning 1,600-meter relay team, setting two records in the process as the Rangers brought home the team title with 122 points, the only girls team to hit 100. Kilgore won the 100-, 200- and 400-meter races with times of 12.99, 26.05 and 58.47 — the latter two meet records. She ran the anchor of the 1,600 relay, as she Reilly Elbert, Kylie Cope and Ruby Mitchell clocked in at 4:20.65 "I'm so proud of myself," Kilgore said. "It's a great accomplishment and I work hard to get the results that I want. We have a lot of good connections on the relays. We have very good handoffs. Everyone works so hard at every meet. We're very strong this year." The other girls record to fall came in the 300 hurdles as Brookside's Jessica Gower clocked in at 46.52. She also took home the title in the 100 hurdles (16.32) and helped Brookside to a fourth-place team finish. "I'm really excited," Gower said. "I wanted to break the meet record and I did, so that's a plus. I want to improve on the back stretch. I feel like I can still push myself a little bit more. My teammates are really great. I love running the two-by-four with them. We have a lot of young girls and they're going to do really well and go really far." The boys did a lot of rewriting, too, as 11 records fell on that side. Five were set by Keystone as the Wildcats strung together another meet victory, scoring 131 points as the only team in triple figures. Ryne Shackelford set a record in four events — the 100 (10.79), 200 (22.14), long jump (22-5) and as anchor of the 400 relay. He, Gideon Lampron, Evan Maiden and Alex Nagle clocked in at 43.21. Nagle set Keystone's other record, winning the 400 at 50.88. "It's kind of cold and windy, but we came out and broke a lot of records today," Shackelford said. "Our four-by-one looked great, our four-by-two, I'm not on it but they did amazing. Everything has been working for us as of late." Vermilion placed second with 92 points with Ayden Bath setting records in the 110 (14.60) and 300 (40.97) hurdles and tying a meet record in the high jump at 6-4. He took second behind Shackelford in the long jump at 20-4.25. "It's definitely been cold, but I think it's only going to make me better," Bath said. "A big goal is going for the school record in the 300 hurdles. I also want to go for the long jump record. For the 300, it's definitely going to help once we have nicer weather."
