Donald Lowell Sheffield

March 6, 1944 - January 21, 2022 Donald Lowell Sheffield, 77, of Buckhannon, West Virginia, died Friday, January 21, 2022 at the United Hospital Center in Bridgeport, West Virginia after a courageous battle with prostate cancer. He was born March 6, 1944 in Oberlin, Lorain County, to Willard Earle and Phyllis Campbell Sheffield. In addition to both of his parents, Don was preceded in death by his brother, Willard E. (Bill) Sheffield. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Carol Jacobus Sheffield (married December 27, 1958) and their two children, Eric Heath Sheffield of the Cleveland area and Robin Avery Sheffield of Buckhannon. Don is also survived by his older brother, Philip (Carole) Sheffield of Elyria and several nieces and nephews and their families. Growing up in Wellington and influenced by an extended family and friends heavily involved in both coaching and playing athletics, Don absolutely loved all things sports, especially football, basketball and baseball. Playing 'flies and grounders' at the Dickson Street athletic field, competing in impromptu touch football games and jumping into pick-up basketball games with friends and cousins out in the cold, dimly lit driveway, at what later became McCormick Middle School, or at the Town Hall courts was how he spent most of his free time as a young boy. Once he reached junior high and high school, it was all about his Wellington Dukes school teams, playing football, basketball and also track and field. After graduating from Wellington High School in 1962, Don went on to earn his B.B.A. from Ohio University, where he was also an active member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. Don was then accepted into and received his J.D. from the University of Akron School of Law. He spent his career working in Healthcare Administration in both Ohio and West Virginia. Additionally, he was involved with a number of different community organizations, including serving on the Board of Directors of Head Start. Don had an extraordinary ability to make those around him laugh with his strong and unique sense of humor. Whether it was at the traditional long weekend of nonstop three-handed pinochle, food and memorable storytelling and laughter with his brothers, with past classmates at reunions, or with family, friends and coworkers, Don always made people smile with a joke or a funny story. He also took the time to stay current on the athletic careers of the children of family and friends, showing genuine interest in their successes and encouraging them in their journeys. He was a lifelong Ohio State Buckeyes and Pittsburgh Steelers fan, attending yearly Buckeye football games with his brother, Phil and going over pregame reports and solving other world issues every Saturday morning on the phone with his brothers. He enjoyed his quick trips to see family in Ohio, doing house chores and taking walks with Robin and watching old movies. A Celebration of Life service will be held at a later date.
