Residents choose Eagle Point as name for Avon's newest park

AVON — With its name officially in place, Avon's new Eagle Point park continues to take shape. The new park is at 39115 Detroit Road, west of Veterans Memorial Park. Residents overwhelmingly favored Eagle Point as their choice in a recent poll of four different options. Results showed 57 percent of respondents chose Eagle Point, compared with 16 percent for West End Park, 15 percent for Angler's Park and 12 percent for Discovery Park. Mayor Bryan Jensen said now that the name is settled, it will be etched into sandstone that sits at the entrance to the park. The city bought the 16.5-acre site for the park last year for $350,000 from the former Kurtz Brothers nursery. Included in the park is a natural spring-fed pond, nearly 4 acres in size, which will be the future location of the Avon Lions Club Fishing Derby. Jensen said the city has named the road leading into the park Lisa Kurtz Memorial Parkway, in honor of a late member of the Kurtz family of the Kurtz Brothers nursery. "They discounted it for us almost $300,000, so we thought that was a fitting memorial to remember their sister," he said. After receiving the unanimous approval of City Council on Monday, the city will advertise for bids to construct new restroom facilities at three parks in Avon, including the new Eagle Point. Restrooms are also set to be built outside the Avon Aquatic Center facility and Northgate Park. Future plans for Eagle Point park include a fishing pier, pavilion and playground. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources previously awarded Avon grants of $100,000 and $43,000 to support the construction of the fishing pier and pavilion. Jensen said grant money will also support a playground at the park. He said work will begin as soon as the weather breaks on some of the infrastructure going in at Eagle Point park.
