High school bowling: Avon lake boys wins first SWC title; Amherst girls make it three straight

AVON LAKE — The Avon Lake boys rallied from a 12-pin deficit through three regular games with a strong Baker round to win their first Southwestern Conference bowling tournament Sunday at Spevock's Nautical Lanes. The Shoremen topped Olmsted Falls by 46 pins in winning their first boys SWC title after finishing seventh a year ago. The Amherst girls were 841 pins better than North Ridgeville in winning their third straight league title. Cam Thorpe had a 682 series, good for foruth overall, and JJ Toth had a 622 (eighth) to lead Avon Lake. Avon's Brenton Dill, a junior and two-time Division I state qualifier, had the high series with a 728. The Comets' Makayla Velasquez rolled a 664 series (246-195-243) to repeat as girls champ, just edging sophomore teammate Allison Taylor's 662 (258-212-192). The final overall SWC standings are based on a combination of the SWC preseason and postseason tournaments as well as dual meets.
