William H. Carter, D.D.S.

William H. Carter, D.D.S., 80, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Monday, January 17, 2022 after a long, fierce battle with dementia. He was born August 21, 1941 in Elyria. He was a 1959 graduate of Elyria High School, attended Wittenberg University and received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from The Ohio State University in 1965. Bill served as a dentist in the U.S. Air Force from 1965-1967 and in the Navy Reserves from 1967-1974. He was very proud of his service to his Country. He opened his first dental practice in Grafton in 1967 and then moved his practice to Elyria in 1969. He spent over 40 years practicing dentistry in Elyria. He also started the dental clinic at the Wesleyan Village in Elyria, serving the patients there for many years. Bill was a member of The First United Methodist Church in Elyria, where he served on multiple committees. He was also a member of the 103rd O.V.I. in Sheffield Lake, where he served on many boards and committees over the years. He was a longtime member of the Lorain County Dental Society and a founding member of the Lorain County Health and Dentistry. He is survived by the love of his life, Sue (Roberts) Carter, who he has been married to for 60 years. He is also survived by his daughter, Tracy Carter (Rick Walker); son, William Carter, Jr. (Sally) and daughter, Kristen Lazard (Scott). Bill had eight grandchildren, who were his pride and joy, Sean Gawlik (Katie Smith), Morgan Farrow (Cody Wooten), Clay Gawlik, Paige Carter, Erin Carter, Will Carter, Molly Lazard and Josie Lazard. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Thelma Carter. Bill loved spending time with his children and grandchildren, always being happiest when surrounded by family. He also enjoyed boating, skiing, golf, hiking and family trips in the RV. The family will be holding a private service only at this time.
