New Lorain County Public Health data shows increased COVID-19 cases in last week

Updated numbers from Lorain County Public Health showed an increase in COVID-19 cases during the last week, with 1,875 new cases reported in the county during the week leading up to Monday. During the week before that, there were 1,271 new cases reported. Two ZIP codes in the Lorain area reported the county's highest rate of new cases last week. The 44052 ZIP code had the county's highest reported rate, with 8.7 new COVID-19 cases per 1,000 population. Trailing it was the 44053 ZIP code with 8.0 new cases per 1,000 population, making it the county's second-highest case rate. Lorain County's ZIP codes with the lowest amount of reported COVID-19 spread in the last week were the Oberlin area's 44074, reporting 4.2 new cases per 1,000 population, and the Avon Lake area's 44012, reporting 4.7 new cases per 1,000 population. The countywide average was 6.2 new cases per 1,000 population over the last week. A full list of Lorain County case and vaccination rates is available online at loraincountyhealth.com/data. Lorain County Public Health also updated its numbers showing COVID-19 vaccination rate by ZIP code. The most-vaccinated ZIP codes remained the same: the Avon Lake area's 44012 with 82 percent of the eligible population inoculated, the Avon area's 44011 with 81 percent and the North Ridgeville area's 44039 with 76 percent. More than half of the eligible population in every Lorain County ZIP code has received a coronavirus vaccine. Statewide on Monday, the Ohio Department of Health reported 4,922 new cases of COVID-19, including both confirmed and probable cases. There were also 177 new hospitalizations and 14 new intensive care unit admissions for COVID-positive patients reported Monday across Ohio. Data from the Ohio Hospital Association and provided to the state health department showed that as of Monday, there were 4,214 COVID-positive inpatients in Ohio hospitals, the highest reported number in at least the last two weeks. There were 1,079 COVID-19 patients reported to be in the intensive care unit and 681 on ventilators, also the highest levels in at least the last two weeks.
