Man accused in fatal downtown Elyria shooting indicted in Common Pleas Court

The suspected gunman in a fatal downtown Elyria shooting on Sept. 3 was indicted on nine criminal charges including aggravated murder Thursday in Lorain County Common Pleas Court. Raython Fields, 27, of Lorain, is accused of shooting and killing Yadiel Torres, 20, about 2:20 a.m. that Friday morning in the 300 block of Broad Street. Officers responding to the report of a shooting found Torres lying on the sidewalk with a gunshot wound to the head, Elyria police said. Four days after the shooting, Fields was apprehended by Elyria police detectives, Ohio Adult Parole Authority and FBI agents, according to Elyria Police. Capt. William Pelko said in September that Torres had walked out of Bugsy's Speakeasy, 348 Broad St., after closing and was outside before he was shot. The aggravated murder charge accuses Fields of purposely causing Torres' death "while committing, or attempting to commit, or while fleeing immediately after committing or attempting to commit the offense of aggravated robbery," according to a copy of the indictment. The aggravated murder charge comes with a firearm specification, as do additional charges of aggravated robbery, three counts of murder, two counts of felonious assault and tampering with evidence. Fields is also charged with having weapons while under disability. His case has not yet been assigned to a judge, court records show. Fields' bond was set at $1 million cash Sept. 28, but that bond was not posted, according to the court records. No suspected motive has been released. A message was left with Michael Stepanik, listed by court records as Fields' defense attorney, for comment.
