James 'Jim' Albert King, Sr.

James 'Jim' Albert King, Sr., 95, of Elyria, passed away peacefully in his sleep at home on Sunday, October 3, 2021. He was born November 6, 1925 in Elyria. He was a 1943 graduate of Elyria High School. Jim enlisted at age 18 in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and served as an aircraft maintainer. He was recalled from the reserves for the Korean Conflict during which he served in the U.S. Air Force as the crew chief on a C-119 aircraft. He graduated from the Northrop Institute of Technology in Inglewood, California and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Miami Beach, Florida. Jim was an avid storyteller and enjoyed recalling his experiences with teenage friends in Elyria and Put-In-Bay as well as many colorful tales from his Military service. In 1988, he retired from NASA in Cleveland with 28 years of service during which he built and operated the cyclotron which was eventually used by the Cleveland Clinic to treat cancer patients. He retired in a supervisory capacity. He enjoyed his many years of membership in Elyria Masonic Lodge #787, the Black River Stamp Club, the Olin Family Society and the Elyria Elks #465. He was most proud of his stamp collection which he began at age seven. Avid travelers, he and Peggy wore out four motorhomes traveling throughout the Country. They also enjoyed taking several ocean cruises. For the past seven years, he helped his daughter, Janice at Z-Graphics by Jan, daily driving himself to and from work and running errands. Jim is survived by children, Linda (Kenneth) Morris of Durham, North Carolina, Kathryn of Atlanta, Georgia, Janice (James) Susak of Carlisle Township and James Jr. (Mary) of Wallingford, Pennsylvania; 11 grandchildren and 18 and a half great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Peggy (nee Hendrix); parents, Albert and Winifred King and a sister, Anna Harris. Friends will be received Wednesday, October 6, 2021 from 6 to 8 p.m. and Thursday, October 7, 2021 from 10 a.m. until the time of an 11 a.m. service at Dicken Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 323 Middle Avenue, Elyria. The Reverend W. Kent Joy will officiate. Burial will be in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst.
