Boys golf: Danny Donegan shoots 73 to lead Avon Lake to Midview Invitational title; Keystone's Ian Morgan top individual with 1-under 70

COLUMBIA STATION — There was a new team on top of the leaderboard Tuesday at the Midview Invitational. Avon Lake, led by senior Danny Donegan's 2-over-par 73, shot a 310 to walk away with the team victory, finishing just ahead of Southwestern Conference rivals Avon (313) and Amherst (316) at Columbia Hills Country Club. "Today I was pretty solid all-around," Donegan said. "I didn't strike the ball great but I chipped and putted pretty well. These are some difficult greens so I was happy my short game was working today. It was windy today and there are a lot of holes that go uphill so I played a little more conservative and I wasn't trying to kill clubs, I was just going one up and taking it smooth." The Shoremen also got a 77 from Aneil Jantz while Billy Haeberstro and Kyle Ritter each shot 80. Avon Lake finished 46 strokes better than it did a year ago when it finished eighth in the event. Donegan alone shaved 21 shots off his score. "I'm super proud of all of my guys — 310 is a great score, especially on a course like this," Donegan said. "We've been playing well recently and I'm excited to see where we go from here and I'm happy that everyone's hard work is paying off." Keystone's Ian Morgan earned medalist honors with a 1-under 70. Morgan, who was the only golfer to break par, actually exceeded his own expectations heading into the round. "I hit a lot of greens and made a decent amount of putts," Morgan said. "I was trying to go 73 or lower so I'm actually really happy with my round. I think the conditions were easier this year than in previous years. The greens were sticking more but they were still kinda fast." The Wildcats, one of only three non-Division I schools in the event, finished fifth with a score of 326. Morgan's brother, Jake, also finished among the leaders with 75. Michael Ebosh had a 79 to lead the way for the host Middies, who finished seventh with a 328. As for the runner-up Eagles, who have dominated the local scene with three tournament wins this season, Jack Gerborg led them with a 74. Sophomore Ryan Yoder led the way for Amherst with a 72, while Joe Kramer shot a 76. "I struck the ball today. I think I hit 13 or 14 greens," Yoder said. "I putted decent. I had two three-putts which were unfortunate but these greens were pretty tough. I was able to read the wind pretty well and adjust my distances." According to Yoder, Tuesday's round could provide a road map on how to attack Pine Hills for the local teams who earn their way to next month's district tournament. "When you play these nice course like Oberlin (Golf Club) and Columbia Hills it really helps your game," Yoder said. "I think Columbia Hills is very similar to Pine Hills where we play districts.
