North Ridgeville condominium unit damaged in fire

NORTH RIDGEVILLE — Several fire departments were called to a North Ridgeville condominium neighborhood Wednesday night for a blaze that broke out in one of the units. No one was injured, but the condo unit on Willow Brook Lane sustained serious damage in the incident. No cause had been determined early Thursday afternoon. North Ridgeville Fire Department Lt. Greg Laborie said a neighbor called in a report of fire showing from the garage at about 8:45 p.m. When the first-arriving firefighters reached the scene, the garage door had burned off and the fire was burning both in the garage and inside the residence. Crews initially began an offensive attack, but within about 20 minutes they were all pulled out of the building because it was becoming structurally "untenable," Laborie said. After that, firefighters began a defensive attack, using aerial ladders and outside hand lines to battle the blaze. "It was extinguished pretty much within about 45 minutes," he said. The roof of the condo unit caved in during the blaze. Laborie said a state fire marshal was investigating Thursday, trying to determine the fire's cause and point of origin. A news release with additional details of the fire had not been completed Thursday afternoon. Units were also sent to the fire from Avon Fire Department, Westlake Fire Department, North Olmsted Fire Department and Olmsted Township Fire Department, according to a Facebook post from Westcom Fire Dispatch.
