District Track: Firelands boys nip Keystone for title at Orrville

ORRVILLE — The Keystone and Firelands boys track teams have gone back and forth all season. This round went to the Falcons, barely, as they edged out the Wildcats 85-84 for the Division II Orrville district championship Saturday afternoon. Both teams will send a multitude of athletes to the Austintown-Fitch regional Thursday and Saturday. Local athletes and teams won 10 events, nine on the boys side. Like their teams, Firelands' Caden Bomback and Keystone's Ryne Shackelford have dueled it out in the 100 and 200 meters throughout the season. Shackelford came away with the championship in the 100 Saturday (11.09) while Bomback finished third (11.32), but the Firelands senior bounced back in the 200, wining the title in 22.70. "I jacked up the start in the 100 today so I wanted to get some revenge," Bomback said. "The gun went off and I was still in the box, just a brain fart on my part. "I think that was my best 200 race of the year. There were some really fast kids there, it went really well." The Wildcats have been led by strong relay teams all season, and the district was no exception. The Wildcats won the 400- and 800-meter relays Saturday after placing fourth in the 3,200 on Thursday. Alex Nagle and Shackelford ran clutch legs in the 400 relay, helping Keystone build a lead that anchor Jacob Stempowski protected. Nagle also came away with the championship in the 400, clocking 50.79, more than a second ahead of the competition. "I just wanted to stay slow coming out, take it up the curve and make sure I was strong on the back end to finish strong," Nagle said. "It feels good, I'm only a sophomore, so there's more to come. I want to get a better time at regionals and make it to state." The girls competition was not nearly as close, as Norwayne finished with almost twice as many points (161) as runner-up Tuslaw. Brookside was the top local team, finishing fourth with 48 points. The only local champion on the girls side was Brookside's Jessica Gower, who won the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 46.34, topping her season best by about 0.6 seconds and finishing more than two seconds ahead of the pack. "It's everything I ever wanted," Gower said of winning the event. "I've wanted to do this my whole high school career. I'm so happy that I've done it. The race felt really smooth, it's a beautiful day today, I think I'm at my best right now. I'm excited (for regionals)." Local athletes almost swept the boys field events — winning four of five. Firelands' Alex Kyer won the shot put (48 feet, 5.25 inches) after winning the discus (151-1) on Thursday, Brookside's Jaycob Kolleda brought home the high jump (6-0) and Shackelford took the long jump (22-1).
