Avon boys finish first, girls finish second at SWC track and field championships

AMHERST — Avon nearly pulled off the sweep Friday at the 85th boys and 47th girls Southwestern Conference Track and Field championships at the Richard S. Cooley Track. The Eagles ran away with the meet on the boys' side, winning by 75 points over second-place Westlake, 183-108. It was the Avon boys' first conference title since winning five straight in the West Shore Conference from 2011-2015. The Eagles joined the SWC during the 2015-16 school year. On the girls' side, a tremendous anchor by sophomore Sarah Colman in the 1,600-meter relay saved Westlake as the Demons held off three-time defending champ Avon to win by four, 121-117. Avon led the 1,600 relay heading into the anchor leg with Westlake way back in eighth. The Eagles fell back to second in the final 50 meters while Coleman rallied the Demons up from eighth to third place to secure Westlake's first conference title since 2007. SWC members since the 1955-56 season, Westlake and North Olmsted are leaving the SWC for the Great Lakes Conference starting in the fall. Nine wins out of 17 events, including victories by all four relays, carried the Avon boys. Senior Jett Wieber and junior Colin Kaufmann led the Eagles, each with three wins and a second place. Wieber won the 800 meters in a meet-record time of 1:55.21, breaking the old mark of 1:55.6 from 1983 set by Rocky River's Bob Mau. Wieber's record metric half mile came 50 minutes after he set a school record in finishing second in the 1,600 to Berea-Midpark senior Evan Alten. Wieber and Alten clocked 4:16.42, but Alten got the win by the closest of margins with a strong last-effort surge in the final two meters to win by 0.006 of a second, 4:16.412 to 4:16.418. Wieber's other win (in addition to helping the Eagles' 3,200-meter relay to a win Wednesday) came as he anchored the 1,600-meter relay to victory in a school-record time of 3:25.81. It broke the 2018 school record of 3:27.30. Nate Ferguson, Alex Heinrich and Johnny Love were the other members of the Avon 1,600 relay. "After the 1,600, it didn't even feel like I had raced. I was so fired up," Wieber said. "Evan beat me fair and square. I was mad, not at him but at myself for becoming complacent and not going all the way to the line. I thought 'I got this.' I should have never done that. I was so fired up for the 800. I knew I was taking it. It was mine. "We wanted the school record for the 1,600 relay. I was hyped for us. That's my third school record today. It was an all-around amazing day for our team. This is a big deal for us. I'm happy we're in this conference. It's competitive. It's tough. I'm happy we put it all out there." Kaufmann won the 100 meters convincingly over North Olmsted's Jared Kelley, 11.08 to 11.38. He was also a member of the winning 800- (1:30.42) and 400-meter (43.93) relays, anchoring the 800 and handling the second leg in the 400. Cole Roberts and Tim Conwell were on both relays. Heinrich was a member of the 800 relay and Joe Weatherspoon was on the 400 relay. Westlake senior Austin Norris prevented Kaufmann from a sweep, rallying in the final five meters to win the 200, 22.81 to 22.03. "I wish I would have got first in the 200, but gold medals are gold medals. I'll take them any day," Kaufmann said. "(Wieber) is a beast, plain and simple. I don't know how the man has those legs. I could never do that. If you ever see Jett at practice, he's never not running. We got a good program and it's continued to work. We just got to keep on doing it." The Avon boys also got a win Friday from freshman Luke Hamilton in shot put (53-3.25). The Avon girls' chances for an SWC title defense took a large hit when senior Juliet Goodelle scratched from the meet after suffering an ankle injury in the 300-meter hurdle prelims Wednesday. Her team's No. 1 hurdler, Goodelle also had to scratch from the 100-hurdle final, as well as from the 800-meter and 1,600-meter relays. Senior Gaby Enourato had the Avon girls' lone win no the track with a victory in the 200 (26.39). She was also third in the 100 (13.10) and second as a member of the 400 relay (50.76). "It was heart-breaking seeing Juliet not being able to run," Enourato said. "She really wanted to. She's a great runner. She's awesome. We scored in all of our events (at least one top-8 finisher in all 17 events). We all tried our best and we all did our best." "We did everything we could," said Avon senior Ally Rennette, who was a member of the Eagles' second-place 1,600-relay, plus was third in the 800 and fourth in high jump. "We knew it was going to be hard. From everything I was able to watch, we did the best that we could. I don't think there were any places where we lost an opportunity that we could have got." Avon senior Molly Radcliffe had a meet-record 144-6 in girls discus to go with her meet-record 49-3.5 in shot put Wednesday. Radcliffe's discus effort broke the 2004 mark of 143-9 set by Bay's Kelley Moore. "My finish was kind of off this week," said Radcliffe, the county discus record-holder at 155-0. "We only had one day of practice this week. It's all good. Everyone has off meets." North Ridgeville junior Veronica Waugaman set a Lorain County record in winning the girls pole vault with a mark of 12-1. She previously shared the record at 12-0 with Avon Lake's Christine Bohan (2013) and Vermilion's Macy Urig (2019). Waugaman set the record on her third attempt.
