H.S. Track: Midview girls win 1st LCAAA title since 1980; Avon boys take 5th since 2014

NORTH RIDGEVILLE — The Midview girls and Avon boys took distinct paths to titles Friday at the 76th Lorain County Athletic Administrators Association Track Invitational at Ranger Stadium. The Midview girls battled Avon Lake right down to the 17th and final event before prevailing. Talent and overall depth carried the Avon boys to their fifth county title since 2014 and 21st overall. The Midview girls held off defending champ Avon 124-117.5 for their first county meet title since wins in 1975 and 1980. The Avon boys took home the title on the strength of 12 wins in 17 events, as the they outdistanced defending champ Avon Lak, 191-100. The Midview girls needed only a seventh place in the last event — the 1,600-meter relay — to seal the deal. The Middies did much better than that, taking a second behind the efforts of Maddie Wendling, Sydney Nowak, Stephanie Sturgeon and Autumn Vance (4:17.44), rallying past North Ridgeville (4:17.70). Avon won the last race in 4:13.73. "We set it up," said Wendling, a senior. "We had been talking about it all week. Our coaches have put so many hours in. We set it up perfectly." Midview won only two events, but its depth was its strength. Wendling was a member of the two winning events — the 800 relay (1:49.42) and the 400 relay (50.71). She teamed with her twin sister Jackie, Vance and Madison Morris for both wins. Two years ago, the Avon girls won the meet going away with 164 points. The Midview girls were a distant ninth with just 20 points. "I'm just so happy to be a part of this team," Maddie Wendling said. "We're working our butts off. This is awesome. Holy cow! It doesn't feel real at all. My legs will be sleeping later, but my smile will be on my face all night." Avon senior Jett Wieber spearheaded the Eagles, setting meet records for the 1,600 (4:23.13) and later the 800 (1:57.74). He also anchored the winning 1,600 relay that included Nate Ferguson, Alex Heinrich and Ian Kitchen (3:35.21). "For me, over the last two years our track program has turned it up huge," said Wieber. "In 2019 we had our worst (SWC) conference finish ever (fourth). I was dealing with an injury (left tibia stress fracture). We rededicated ourselves to work very hard, offseason, in season and indoor track, all year round. Now it's paying off. "I'm so happy I was able to set two records. I came into the meet knowing how to race smart. I knew that I would likely be racing alone, but I knew that I had to get these two records and take them down." The county meet had its share of records, two by the boys (by Wieber) and two by the girls. Another girls meet record was tied in pole vault. Avon senior Molly Radcliffe, the county discus record-holder at 148-0, destroyed the 2013 meet record of 132-6 held by Avon Lake's Christine Bohan with a toss of 145-3. It was Radcliffe's second best and Lorain County's second best of all time. Radcliffe would have had the meet record for girls shot put at 42-6, but Avon Lake senior Brooke Lumpkin owned the event with a throw of 44-4.75. The old record was 41-0 set in 2011 by Lorain's Shaniqua Ogle. "I wasn't loving it (technique) today," said Radcliffe. "There's a lot to work on, a lot to fix, especially on a cold day like today, but I'll take it. My best throw came on my second or third attempt. I fouled a lot, but it only takes one." Lumpkin appeared very pleased. She was coming off a career-record throw of 46-8.5 last Saturday at the Medina Relays. "It went pretty well. I'm happy with the results," said Lumpkin, who also placed second in discus (115-8). "I wasn't doing as well in the beginning, but I'm glad I was able to do something in the mid-40s. North Ridgeville junior Veronica Waugaman tied the 2011 meet record held by Avon Lake's Morgan Srail for girls pole vault with a mark of 11-0. "I needed only one attempt to make 11-0 and made three tries at 11-3. I was close," said Waugaman, who cleared a personal-record 11-6 last Saturday at the Nordonia Relays. "Right now I'm working on my consistency like my run and the rest of my vault. I'm pretty happy I'm consistent at 11-0 right now, but I'm hoping to get back up to that 11-6 mark."
