Alaina Camacho's body, car recovered in Lorain missing-persons case (VIDEO)

LORAIN — As a gold Honda Accord was pulled to the surface of Lake Erie on Monday afternoon, the sounds of sobs emerged from the gathered crowd of family and friends of the two young adults whose bodies were recovered from site. The bodies of Alaina Camacho, 18, of Cleveland, and Nathan Orona, 20, of Lorain, were pulled from Lake Erie, almost two months after their disappearance. Camacho and her car were recovered from the lake Monday while Orona was spotted by a fisherman Sunday morning and recovered later that day. The cause of death, including how long the pair were in the water, remains under investigation. Autopsy results are expected in the coming days. Throughout the day, family, friends and onlookers gathered on the pier across from where Camacho's car was found beneath the water. They lined the concrete walkway, huddled together under blankets against the wind while they watched dive teams work to recover the teen's body and secure her car to be hoisted ashore. Orona's aunts Jessica Serrano and Jennifer Sanabria stayed close to their mother, Muneca Figueroa, watching the recovery for hours. "This isn't how we wanted it to end," Jessica Serrano said. Camacho's family also had hoped for a different outcome, but Albert Camacho said earlier in the day crews expected to find his niece there after Orona's body was recovered. "They just went down there to hang out. … I've been there when I was a kid," Albert Camacho said. "It's very dangerous." With the car hanging by tow ropes, many of the onlookers turned to each other, crying. "This was the outcome we get," Albert Camacho said. "And now we can put closure to it. We've got him, we've got her." Crews originally began searching the water Sunday after Orona's body was found, but inclement weather halted efforts until Monday. Once the search resumed, crews located Camacho's 2004 Honda Accord via side-scan sonar. The Lorain Police and Lorain County dive teams were assisted by crews from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and Sugar Ridge Towing in recovering the vehicle. Her car was found near the edge of the Hot Waters fishing pier, its roof visibly crushed. There is no guardrail on or edging around the pier. According to the National Weather Service, it was snowing at the time of the pair's disappearance, with about half an inch accumulating. Temperatures were around 30 degrees, and light ice was beginning to form on Lake Erie though it probably would not have been frozen solid, meteorologist Zach Sefcovic said, with the water temperature around 34 degrees. The snow blocked some of the last security footage of the two, which shows Camacho picking Orona up from his mother's apartment at Sheffield Estates before turning left on O'Neill Boulevard toward Elyria Avenue around 1:40 a.m. Feb. 1. In the two months since their disappearance, Camacho and Orona's families have organized countless searches, hoping to find some sign of their loved ones. Those searches included Hot Waters, including using boats to search along the piers where they were ultimately found, but those volunteers were only able to search along the surface of the water — not more than 20 feet to the bottom. Councilman Rey Carrion, D-6th Ward, said he spoke to Camacho's family late Monday evening and said there are plans for a news briefing and public vigil. "They are just torn to pieces. Obviously the longer this thing lasted, the more concerned they became," he said. "Reality was sinking in that this could be not a good ending, but I don't think anyone was prepared to see this."
