High school basketball: Clearview's Brooke Rebman named MVP in All-Star Game win

NORTH RIDGEVILLE — The West Side Seniors All-Star Game didn't have the history or pageantry of the traditional high school all-star games that usually wrap up the season. But for the 17 girls who took the court Sunday at HoopTech, just having the opportunity to play another high school game was more than enough. Clearview senior Brooke Rebman added to her impressive list of accomplishments by earning the MVP Award with a game-high 16 points as the Black team defeated the White team 59-53. Rebman, who averaged 25 points per game as the leading scorer in Lorain County this season, scored 14 of her points in the first half to help Black pull out to a 39-31 halftime lead. "I think I did pretty good. At first I didn't even know if I was going to be invited," Rebman said. "It was a good thing to do. I've played against Ashley (Hisle) from Lorain many times. It was different to play with her tonight." Hisle, who scored eight of her 10 points in the second quarter was the only other player in double figures. "It was a lot of fun to play tonight and be able to celebrate the final game of my high school career," Hisle said. Hisle may have missed out on more than any other local senior in this pandemic-scarred season. Her Lorain team only played 10 games due to numerous COVID-related shutdowns and was unable to play its sectional tournament game due to being under quarantine. "I was happy, really happy, when I found out I was going to get to play another game," Hisle said. "It was a rough year, we got shut down seven different times this year, so I was really excited to come here and finish on a happy note." Avon Lake's Emma Knick also had eight points for the Black team, with all of her points coming in the first quarter. At halftime, Knick defeated North Ridgeville senior Madyson Rosado, 11-10, in the final of the 3-point shootout. "I'm honored to have made it to the finals," Knick said. "I was trying to stay calm and confident with my shot. I started getting nervous there when Maddy started to make her shots, she started out so hot. No matter which one of us would have won, I would have been just as happy." The first round of the 3-point contest took place before the game with the all-stars shooting at shooting machines around the expansive HoopTech facility. In that opening round Knick made 21 3-pointers. "I felt more pressure on the main court shooting," Knick said. "The key was maintaining my composure and sticking with my routine." The White team was paced by Olmsted Falls' Grace Simon, who scored nine points on a trio of 3-pointers. Avon's Alyssa Peganoff and Firelands' Madison Sutton had eights points each. After Black took a double-digit lead early in the third quarter, Olmsted Falls seniors Lauren Galaska and Allison Milligan combined to score 12 of their team's 16 third-quarter points to keep the White team in the game. Columbia's Allyson Ross, Lorain County's 2021 Miss Basketball, scored four points for White. In addition to walking away with another trophy for her collection, Rebman also won a $500 scholarship as the game's MVP. "I was kinda upset when my school lost in the tournament," Rebman said.
