Ohio adds 1,019 new COVID-19 cases Sunday

The Ohio Department of Health reported 1,019 new coronavirus cases in the state Sunday — 1,009 confirmed and 10 labeled probable. No new deaths from COVID-19 were reported among Ohio residents but death numbers no longer are updated daily on the Ohio Department of Health's website due to changes in how the data is reported. There were 27 new admissions to hospitals in Ohio for COVID-19 reported on Sunday, but no patients were reported to be admitted to intensive care units with the virus. With the state health department presuming nearly 962,000 coronavirus in the state have recovered, the agency's data indicates there are an estimated 31,279 active cases across the state. About 814 of those presumed active cases are in Lorain County. Overall pandemic numbers have plateaued following a period of decline, public health officials and Gov. Mike DeWine said late last week. Even as the drop in new cases has stalled, more Ohioans have been getting vaccinated against the virus. Statewide, there have now been 3,245,116 people who have received at least their first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, which is nearly 28 percent of the state population. Of that group, 1,857,700 people in Ohio have taken all recommended vaccine doses, according to an online Ohio Department of Health dashboard. DeWine will spend part of Monday visiting three vaccination sites in Monroe, Morgan and Vinton counties to get an up-close look at the progress of the state's vaccination effort. Lorain County's vaccination rate is close to the state's overall rate, with nearly nearly 29 percent of residents having received their first dose. In the county, 89,001 people have received at least one dose and 48,455 people have had all recommended doses. No new cases were reported among inmates or staff members at either Grafton Correctional Institution or Lorain Correctional Institution on Sunday. Grafton Correctional currently is reporting one active staff case and no active inmate cases, while Lorain Correctional is reporting three active staff cases and no active inmate cases. Lorain County Public Health does not update local confirmed case data on the weekends, so the agency's next update is expected Monday afternoon.
