Girls basketball: Olmsted Falls uses press to flatten North Ridgeville

NORTH RIDGEVILLE — When Olmsted Falls turned up the pressure, North Ridgeville had nowhere to turn. The Bulldogs blitzed the Rangers with a full-court trap, forcing a slew of turnovers in a dominant 65-25 Southwestern Conference win Wednesday. After a tight first quarter, Olmsted Falls (6-1, 5-0 SWC) turned up the defensive heat. The Rangers (5-3, 2-3) turned the ball over seven times in the first four minutes of the second quarter as the Bulldogs went on a 7-0 run to take a 22-11 lead. Madyson Rosado scored five straight points to pull the Rangers back to within six but Olmsted Falls went on an 18-0 run to end the first half and open the second to take control. It was 40-16 when Rosado finally ended the run with 4:05 left in the third quarter. Freshman Grace Kingery added a 3-pointer to make it five straight points for the Rangers, but the Bulldogs ended the quarter on a 15-0 run to blow the game open. The Rangers had 27 turnovers and shot just 24.3 percent (10 of 41) from the floor for the game "I just feel like (Olmsted Falls) is a well-oiled machine," North Ridgeville coach Amy Esser said. "They are aggressive and I think their main goal was to take Daylan (Baker) out of her game. They tried to make her take a lot of things on herself, which forced a lot of stuff. "Credit to them, they're just a very good defensive team. Even though we've gone over how to break their press it's hard to mimic what they do on the court." Baker, a junior, scored four points on just six shots. Freshman Grace Kingery led the Rangers with 10 points and 10 rebounds. "We haven't played that type of competition this year," Esser said. "Midview's pressure was really good, too, but nothing like Olmsted Falls'. I think they're one of the best teams in the state right now." Senior guard Allison Mulligan paced the Bulldogs with 15 points, while Sara Glover added 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds off the bench. "You have to give our kids a lot of credit," Olmsted Falls coach Jordan Eaton said. "We spend a lot of time in practice getting ourselves in really good physical shape, and a lot of times in practice it's not very much fun. "It's a lot of fun to be able to play that way. You have to give the kids a lot of credit for being coachable and getting themselves into the best physical condition so we can run up and down all game."
