High school football: Five from area earn top all-district awards (UPDATED)

Avon and Avon Lake swept the podium of the Division II Northeast District football honors. Avon coach Mike Elder and quarterback Niko Pappas were named coach of the year and offensive player of the year while Avon Lake defensive lineman Kadyn Viancourt was named defensive player of the year. Two other players took home the top awards in their respective divisions. Elyria linebacker Jesse Stevens was named defensive player of the year in Division I and Keystone running back Gideon Lampron took home offensive player of the year honors in Division IV. "It's a big honor and certainly something I appreciate and value, but every head coach in football knows that one person doesn't coach a program," said Elder, who is preparing the Eagles for their fourth straight state semifinal game, this time against Hoban on Friday night at Byers Field in Parma. "I see it more as a team honor and a staff honor. I have a great coaching staff, great support from our administration here at Avon and we have great kids and great families. I'm very honored by it, but I also know it's a reflection of our entire program and not just me as an individual." At 9-0, Avon again takes a perfect record into the state tournament and holds a 47-4 mark during its run of four straight Division II, Region 6 championships. This is the Eagles' fourth undefeated regular season in five years. Pappas has been part of all four regional championships. He played predominately at safety during his sophomore and junior seasons — while serving as the team's backup quarterback in 2019 — before taking over the starting quarterback job this year. He completed 67 percent of his passes for 1,695 yards and 20 touchdowns to six interceptions, also rushing for 616 yards and seven touchdowns. "What I'm most impressed with is his leadership ability," Elder said of Pappas. "He's a great kid on and off the field. He is our undisputed leader, him and (center) Mason Bingham lead our team. What's remarkable about him is what he's done this offseason to improve himself as a quarterback. He was always an athlete, but he became a much better passer throughout the last year. He'll rank right up there as one of the best quarterbacks to every play here." Viancourt has been an anchor on a stout Avon Lake defense for the past two seasons, helping the Shoremen to a 19-4 record over the span. Last year, the Shoremen set a school record for points allowed at 7.5 points per game, including 27 in the Southwestern Conference, and six shutouts. Avon Lake was nearly as stout this year — allowing seven points or fewer in six games, with two shutouts. Only three teams, in four games, managed to score double figures against the Shoremen. Viancourt had 27 tackles and led the team with 10 sacks, also adding nine quarterback hits, an interception, two pass break ups and a defensive touchdown. "It feels weird because it's not just me, everyone's had a great year," Viancourt said. "I'm very blessed and honored to receive it, I couldn't be more happy to win the award. We play as one unit. Our motto is to be a stallion. We play hard, we play fast and we run through teams on defense. Everyone is on the same page with everything. We all had the same goal to win and be great." At 6-foot-2, 200 pounds, Stevens was one of the leaders on the Pioneers defense. The unit held strong against Euclid in the opening round of the Division I, Region 1, playoffs, limiting a Panthers offense that averaged 25 points a game to 21 — its fourth-lowest total of the year — one week after giving up 42 to Euclid in the regular season. Stevens racked up 70 tackles and 16 sacks while forcing two fumbles and recovering another. "It's an honor," Stevens said. "We worked so hard this season. We have a lot of leaders on our team and we're a family, really. If someone fell down, we'd pick them up for the next play." In Division IV, Lampron's monster offensive season helped propel Keystone to the No. 4 seed in Region 14 and its first playoff victory. The junior running back ran for 1,592 yards and 19 touchdowns. He was at his best when the Wildcats needed him most. He had 301 yards and five touchdowns in Keystone's 46-27 playoff win over Edison. He also piled up 244 yards and two touchdowns against Firelands and its stout defense in a 40-14 win that decided the Lorain County League championship. "All the hard work finally paid off," said Lampron, who was quick to thank his offensive line for his success. "Me and my team worked really hard for this. My entire team played an amazing season, so I wasn't too surprised. We played really good in big games, it was an amazing season." Contact Chris Sweeney at 329-7135 or ctsports@chroniclet.com.
