Boys soccer: Open Door buries Columbia with onslaught of goals

ELYRIA TWP. — An early trickle of goals turned into a late torrent for Open Door. After opening the scoring in the first minute, the Patriots didn't get things going again until late in the first half in a 9-0 victory over Columbia on Monday. Junior Rainers Kinnear scored on an assist from sophomore Ian Eck just 2:50 into the first half, but it took Open Door nearly 27 minutes to get its second goal when Kinnear dribbled through the defense and netted his second of the game. Kinnear completed the hat trick just 17 seconds later, scoring one of eight Patriots' goals over the final 49:20 of playing time. Richie Schieferstein and Preston Hillegass added two goals each for the Patriots (4-1-1). Open Door coach Joel Baker liked how his team was able to settle into the game. "When you are in a tight situation in a competitive game, sometimes you push too hard," he said. "We had to relax and calm down and obviously that worked out well in the second half." Kinnear said once the second goal went in the floodgates opened up. "It was momentum," he said. "We scored two goals and (Columbia) was kind of bumming out. We just had to go in hard and keep pressing." The Raiders (0-4) did not get their only shot on goal until late in the second half. "We worked well because we communicated well," Open Door center back Bailey Loescher said. "We made sure we were picking each other up and filling for each other and always keeping each other positive." Columbia finished the game with just 10 players. Senior captain Frank Washburn had to leave the game after hurting his shoulder early in the second half. Senior goalkeeper Ryan Davis also had to leave the game after banging his shoulder defending a penalty shot late in the game. "Columbia is always a great opponent," Baker said. "They always work hard and it's just a pleasure to be out and playing.
