5 dead in Elyria home (UPDATED)

ELYRIA — Police are investigating a shooting in the 500 block of Willow Park Road that left five dead, two adults and three children ages 6 through 12. Police Capt. Bill Pelko said the victims are all from one family. The deaths are under investigation and a crisis intervention specialist has been brought in to assist safety personnel, including dispatchers, officers and detectives. The only outward sign of trouble in the single family home is two splinter marks in the vinyl siding on the east side of the house that police said were cause from gunfire inside the home. Police officers discovered the bodies after responding to a wellness check at 8:11 a.m. Linda Bristow lives two houses down from the family. Her son works with a family member of the household and became concerned when he didn't show up for work in the morning. He stopped by their house, only to find some bullet casings. He then called the police for a wellness check. Bristow said she thought the gunshots Tuesday were fireworks. She said she heard the kids screaming, but she thought they were headed for the pool in the backyard. But they never got in the pool. "Now I know why they were running around screaming," she said. She said she knew something was wrong when the ambulance left Wednesday morning with no one inside after police arrived on scene. Bristow said she has known the family her whole life — she's attended birthday parties and helped out around the house. Over the July 4 weekend, she said her sons helped put a new roof on the house.
