Motorcyclist killed in crash on state Route 57

EATON TWP. — A man was killed in a motorcycle crash on state Route 57 south of state Route 82 on Sunday evening. The Ohio State Highway Patrol confirmed that Gage Carnes, 20, of Grafton Township died after his Suzuki GSX-R1000 motorcycle struck the side of a 1982 Cadillac Eldorado coupe that was turning left toward a driveway at 7:22 p.m. Sunday. Carnes was attempting to pass the Cadillac, driven by Daniel Hoot, 35, of Eaton Township, the patrol said. Both were driving southbound. Hoot did not appear to suffer any injuries, according to the Patrol. Both the Cadillac and motorcycle came to rest in a yard on the east side of the road, near a wooded area. They were later towed from the scene by Vaughn's Auto Repair & Towing. Carnes was using a motorcycle helmet and safety restraint prior to the crash. Alcohol and drugs are not suspected to be involved. The Lorain County Coroner's office pronounced him dead at the scene. One of the car's wheels was taken off at some point during the crash. Troopers appeared to be searching for one of the motorcycle's wheels as well. The motorcycle was reportedly driving with some speed when the crash happened, said Carlisle Township fire Lt. Louis Hodge, at the scene. Next-of-kin have been notified and an investigation is ongoing by the Elyria Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
