Grafton man shoots wife, then fatally shoots self in garage (UPDATED, VIDEOS)

GRAFTON — A 60-year-old man is dead and his 53-year-old wife injured in a domestic violence incident Tuesday morning. Police say the couple lived in a home on Hunters Chase and were going through a separation. The husband allegedly arrived at the house and confronted his wife about the separation, but she indicated that she did not want to reconcile. At this time, he attempted to trap her in their garage, but she fled into the driveway. The husband then began shooting at his wife, striking her "approximately three times," police said. Despite being shot, she was able to get into her vehicle and escape. The husband continued firing shots and struck the vehicle, police said. The woman approached a Grafton police officer in the 300 block of North Main Street shortly before 10 a.m., saying her husband had shot her at their nearby home, according to police. Neighbors said they heard shots fired shortly before then and saw a dark-colored sport utility vehicle leave Hunters Chase in a hurry, presumably driven by the injured woman. Officers administered first aid to the woman on Main Street for visible gunshot wounds to her upper extremities. She was later transported to a hospital by Grafton EMS for non-life-threatening injuries. Grafton police, LaGrange police and the Lorain County Sheriff's Office set up a perimeter around the Hunters Chase home until the Lorain County SWAT team and negotiators arrived. Negotiators used a loudspeaker to attempt to talk with the man inside, but received no response. Law enforcement personnel were seen sending a remotely operated vehicle inside the garage, where the husband was found dead from a single self-inflicted gunshot wound. Grafton police have not named either party in the incident, and Lorain County Coroner Dr. Stephen Evans said the police will identify the man after notifying family. Records from the Lorain County auditor's website show the Hunters Chase home is owned by Paul and Tracy Goldsmith. Voting records indicate Paul Goldsmith is registered to vote at that address and was born in 1960, making him either 59 or 60 years old.
