Oberlin prosecutor chosen as newest school board member

OBERLIN — Attorney Farah Emeka was appointed Tuesday to fill former Oberlin Board of Education President Albert Borroni's vacant seat through the end of 2021. Borroni, most recently elected to a four-year term in 2017, was required by state law to step down after moving to Avon. The title on his Oberlin home transferred June 3. The move was made to be closer to family members, he said. "We've been looking for a while and finally decided to pull the trigger just before the economy shut down," he said. Borroni will continue to work in Oberlin, where he serves as director of the Center for Technologically Enhanced Teaching at Oberlin College. Named president of the Board of Education in January, he said he will miss his time helping to steer the public school system. "It's been an amazing experience and I appreciate everyone's trust," Borroni said. "I think the board is in amazing hands, and our district is one of the few I think is able to handle this (COVID-19) disruption." Emeka was sworn in Tuesday. A lawyer at Elyria-based Fauver Attorneys & Counselors at Law since 2018, she is an Oberlin College graduate and holds a degree from Seattle University School of Law. She is a member of the Lorain County Bar Association and has been admitted to practice in both the U.S. District Court in Cleveland and the Ohio Supreme Court. Emeka's practice focuses on business and real estate civil law. She also is the prosecutor for the city of Oberlin, village of South Amherst and Amherst, Brighton, Camden, Henrietta, Huntington, New Russia, Penfield, Pittsfield, Rochester and Wellington townships. Because of Borroni's departure, Jason Williams was selected to serve as the Oberlin school board president for the remainder of 2020.
