Avon High School student scores perfect 36 on ACT

AVON — Avon High School junior Cole Emerine, 17, recently earned a perfect composite score on the ACT exam. On average, fewer than 2 percent of students who take the test earn a perfect 36. Emerine first took the ACT last year as a sophomore to practice for his junior year ACT test, when all Avon High School students take the exam. Without studying, he scored a 35. "I didn't study the first time because it was just a benchmark for me. I was surprised last year to get the 35. I didn't study this year either," he said in a release from Avon Schools. In school, Emerine is taking several Advanced Placement courses and is a three-sport athlete in cross country, hockey and track, in addition to playing saxophone in the marching band and serving as vice president of the Future Scholars of Medicine Club. While quarantined, he has been challenging himself to learn to speak Italian, French and Turkish, he said. He already takes Spanish class in school. Emerine's career goals include obtaining a medical and doctoral degree and working in cancer research. Although he is undecided on a university, his top schools include Duke University, Stanford University and the Georgia Institute of Technology.
