During the stay-home-spring My Morning Jacket keyboardist Bo Koster is thinking a lot about growing up in Northeast Ohio. "I don't get back that much these days, usually just on tour or for a Cavs game, but I'm still in contact with a bunch of family and my high school friends," said 1992 Lakewood High School graduate, Koster, who now lives outside of Los Angeles in Highland park. "It seems like most people in Cleveland are kind of just rolling with the punches." Not only does the Lakewood native have lots of family in the area, but the touring musician — who in the past few years spent time on the road with Roger Waters and Ray LaMontagne — has been forced to relive a hardship of his youth. While admittedly quite trivial compared to the pandemic, Koster said he looked forward for a year to ESPN's Michael Jordan documentary "Last Dance" without fully realizing what toe-stubbing awaited the walk down memory lane. "When they pushed up the airing of the documentary I was so stoked," Koster said "I've watched every episode twice. Then 'The Shot' came up. I was texting my Cavs friends and Ohio University classmates here we go. I don't want to relive this." As far as reliving good things over again, My Morning Jacket has been throwing out some nuggets to fans. The rock band — which often explores alternative vibes and trippy psychedelic motifs with hints of country and Americana — has put more than 25 shows on nugs.net's live music streaming service. In addition, the Jim James-led act last week put up a webcast of its memorable 2016 Shaky Knees Festival from Atlanta on the same website. "The recollection I have from that show is that we have an enormous amount of special effects stuff," Koster said. "We just kind of pulled out all of the stops with confetti, fireworks and a huge light show. "Right now as a band, we're trying to put new material out there while everybody is hunkered down. We're using this time to kind of reimagine how we connect with the fans." One way fans of My Morning Jacket would love to connect with their band would be a new studio release. Koster said the group is close to finishing a follow-up to 2015's "The Waterfall." However, COVID-19 has obviously kept the group from completing the project. "The ball was already rolling on that," Koster said. "It's just a matter of when at this point because putting out a record when we can't tour on it is like far from ideal. We don't know when that's going to be. That could be this fall or fall of 2021. It's just so hard to know." Referencing My Morning Jacket fan favorite "One Big Holiday," that's what it will be once the pandemic ends when musicians and fans can once again celebrate music in a live settings. "I think we'll get through this one way or another," Koster said. "It might take some time. It's tough for musicians. It's what we like to do and how we make our living. So, it's like a little weird — almost as if we've gone into retirement when we're all in our prime." Just like Michael Jordan returned from retirement with a vengeance, My Morning Jacket is hoping to do the same without missing a beat.
