Argument leads to shooting in Elyria on Tuesday night

ELYRIA — A man was shot multiple times in the torso after he argued with his girlfriend's son Tuesday night. Elyria Police Capt. Chris Costantino said Willie Boone, 39, of Elyria was shot multiple times by Anthony Russell, 21, of Elyria. Costantino said Boone is dating Russell's mother. He said Russell was interviewed by detectives and confessed to shooting Boone multiple times. Officers also found shell casings in front of a nearby apartment, and a gun under the bed in Russell's bedroom. According to a release from Elyria police, officers responded to shots fired in the 1400 block of West River Road. While en route, they learned a man was knocking on another apartment door, saying he had been shot. When officers arrived and found Boone, he removed his sweatshirt and officers saw he'd been shot multiple times. According to the release, he only would officers he was shot outside. Boone was taken to University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center and later flown to University Hospitals Main Campus in Cleveland. Costantino said that Boone was stable and recovering later Wednesday. Costantino said Russell told police he was upset that his mother and Boone always were fighting. Russell told police that Boone also threatened to fight him before the shooting. Russell told police his anger got the best of him, which prompted the shooting. Russell was charged with felonious assault and improperly discharging a firearm into a habitation. He was taken to Lorain County Jail and was being held without bond pending his court appearance. A neighbor who lived near the incident said Boone was knocking on several doors after he was shot. "He said 'Help Help Help. Call the ambulance. I've been shot,'" the neighbor said. Living there for over five years, she said the complex has had several serious incidents while she's been there. "This just to me is not a safe place to live anymore," the neighbor said. Costantino said officers did a great job making contact with residents and determining Russell was the shooter. He said their work allowed them to find the casings and gun, and get a confession out of Russell. "It was excellent police work," Costantino said.
