Elyria man assaults multiple people in domestic violence incident

ELYRIA — A man was arrested Monday after police say he assaulted several people, including the mother of his unborn child. Inacio Arias-Irrizarry, 21 of Elyria is facing charges of tampering with evidence, two counts of disrupting public service, menacing, four counts of assaults, domestic violence against a pregnant victim and aggravated menacing. Police reported that the mother of Arias-Irrizarry's child arrived at the apartment with two friends and her child to find him there, blocking the door. The mother and a friend were able to push open the door and get in halfway, when Arias-Irrizarry began to close the door on her. When the friend yelled "You're smashing me" Arias-Irrizarry then let the friend and mother into the apartment. He then slammed the mother to the ground, and when she got up she pushed her into the corner of the apartment and started strangling her. The mother told police later she is three-months pregnant with Arias-Irrizarry. Arias-Irrizarry yelled at the mother for speaking to police the day prior. According to the report, he threatened to kill her. "I will kill you, you can put that on my unborn kids life," Arias-Irrizarry said in the report. The mother's friend text another friend in the car to come into the apartment. The second friend asked a maintenance worker at the apartment complex to watch the car with the baby in it, who agreed to stand in the doorway and keep watch. The second friend came into the apartment and filmed the incident before trying to call the police. Arias-Irrizarry grabbed the friend and was able to get her cell phone, throwing it on the ground to break it. The friend yelled to the maintenance worker who was in the doorway to call the police. Arias-Irrizarry asked him not to, and when he did anyway, Arias-Irrizarry tried to take the the maintenance worker's phone, eventually putting him in a chokehold. The man gave up his phone, unable to call police. Arias-Irrizarry made a run for the mother's vehicle, but the mom was able to close the door. According to the report, closing the door locked the car with the keys and baby inside. Arias-Irrizarry then began punching the car. He was unable to break the glass, and fled the scene. The maintenance worker was able to unlock the car with his tools. The four then went to the Elyria Police Department. While they were at the station, police reported that the mother got a call from Arias-Irrizarry. "I'm at the apartment," Arias-Irrizarry said on the call. "I hid in a dumpster when the cops came." Officers report that they received permission and went to the apartment. When they went in, Arias-Irrizarry was standing in the room. He was placed in the police cruiser where he then tried to slip his handcuffs. He was restrained again and transported to Lorain County Jail. He is being held on a total $30,000 bond.
