2019 High School Football Week 3: Keystone blanks South Central

LAGRANGE — It took the better part of a quarter for Keystone's offense to find its rhythm. Once the Wildcats started rolling Friday evening against visiting South Central, it seemed that nothing could stop them. Except for a force of nature. Senior Jacob Shackelford threw three touchdown passes and ran for another score, and Keystone scored 30 points in the second quarter. The Wildcats led the Trojans 30-0 before a thunderstorm moved through the area and halted the game with 1:31 left before halftime. After waiting for about an hour, the teams decided just after 9 o'clock to call the game complete. But not before Shackelford threw for 220 yards and Keystone racked up 348 yards of offense. "We're going to make you defend sideline to sideline," Keystone coach Don Griswold said. "It took us a minute and we had some missed assignments and that's going to happen with 16-year-old kids. But that's what we can do. Jacob's been starting for us for 2½ years. He had four touchdowns for us last week and he does a lot of things for us." Shackelford put the Wildcats (2-1) on the board with a 19-yard run in which he tucked the ball and ran around the left end untouched into the corner off the end zone. A blocked extra point left Keystone with a 6-0 lead. Freshman Ryne Shackelford set up the first score, intercepting South Central (2-1) quarterback Evan Legg's pass in the middle of the field and returning it to the Trojans 44-yard line. On the next two Keystone drives, Jacob Shackelford hooked up with senior Dominic Torok for TD passes of 38 and 48 yards to push the lead to 21-0. Facing fourth-and-18, Keystone called a timeout and sent the offense back onto the field. Shackelford found Torok running wide open down the left sideline and flung the ball his way for an easy score. Their second connection, just more than a minute later after South Central turned the ball over on downs, looked just like the first. After keeping the ball on an option play, Shackelford threw to a wide-open Torok down the left sideline again. The play design, which is a key part of the Keystone offense, gives Shackelford the option of handing the ball to a running back, keeping the ball and running himself, or throwing if the defense comes up to stop the run. "They had seven in the box and they were going to take away the run, so we had to pass," Griswold said. With 2:53 left in the second quarter, Shackelford threw his final touchdown, this one to brother Ryne for a 51 yards and a 28-0 lead. At that point, he'd completed three of his last four passes for 137 yards and three TDs. The nightcap came on the ensuing series when South Central attempted to punt on fourth down from its 28-yard line. The snap sailed high, and punter John Hale picked it up and ran out of the back of the end zone for a safety. That was the final play before the storm halted action. "When we first got off the field, the plan was to play the last 90 seconds (of the quarter), take a two-minute break for halftime and then have a running clock (for the third and fourth quarters)," Griswold said. "So when this fireworks show kicked off, so to speak, it became apparent that this isn't going to happen tonight. There's no reason for them to go to Greenwich tonight to come back at whatever time. It doesn't make sense." Shackelford finished 13-of-20 passing for 220 yards, with 51 rushing yards. Torok caught five passes for 108 yards, and Dylan Naylor ran for 70 yards on 10 carries. Keystone plays Clearview next Friday in what will be the inaugural game for both teams in the new Lorain County League. "It's where we thought we'd be — 2-1 or 3-0," Griswold said.
