Lorain County Urban League names interim leader

As a new search begins, the Lorain County Urban League named an interim CEO until it finds a replacement.Parris Smith, who was recently promoted to manager of operations, will fill in as the temporary CEO until about mid-August, which is when the organization expects to complete its search.Cindy Kushner, chairwoman of the board for the Lorain County Urban League, said Smith will build on the foundation of the league and continue what's already been started there.Smith has worked there for four years and Kushner said she knows the community and organization very well."She's a real go-getter and highly valued," Kushner said. "We want her to continue what's been happening."Frank Whitfield previously served as the CEO of the league, but recently pursued political office as an independent candidate for Lorain mayor.Kushner said the league doesn't permit employees to run for office while working there, which she said Whitfield was aware of and he was willing to step down.The search for the new CEO is under a tight timeline, but Kushner said the league is putting the word out and casting a wide net, although it is still looking locally."I think one important aspect is to know the community, or be willing to do the homework," she said. "And they should know the Urban League in general."Kushner said she wants to encourage local people to apply for the position if they believe they'd be a good fit.In a news release, Kushner said the candidate should have a bachelor's degree, although a master's is preferred. The board also is looking for at least five years of senior nonprofit or forprofit management experience.A candidate also will need at least two years of experience working with a volunteer board or in community leadership.Kushner said she couldn't speak for Smith, but would welcome her application if she chose to do so.
